Date-stamped : 06 May96 - 02:13 Sunday League 1996 Kent v Lancashire St Lawrence Ground, Canterbury 5 May 1996 ====> REPORT By Ralph Dellor Lancashire (185-1) bt Kent (184-9) by 9 wkts LANCASHIRE put on the type of efficient display which suggests that another title could be on its way to Old Trafford come the end of the summer. Fast scoring was never easy on the Canterbury pitch but Kent`s batsmen never came to terms with a disciplined attack and only Mark Ealham, with a 46-ball half century, gave the innings an air of respectability. Even their meagre total of 184 for nine took on more serious pro- portions at the outset of Lancashire`s innings. The ball beat the bat frequently and Tim Wren, in particular, had an interest- ing duel with the fresh air adjacent to Michael Atherton`s out- side edge. Gradually the target came within reach and the batsmen asserted their authority. Jason Gallian clubbed a personal best 85 before Atherton completed the formalities with five overs and nine wick- ets to spare against a Kent side which belied their status of defending champions.
