Nottinghamshire had lost their last eight wickets for 55 in eight overs as they slid to 209 all out, while Hampshire gave that decline the appearance of gen- tle subsidence by giving up their last seven wickets in a mere six overs for 19 runs. Tim Robinson and Paul Pollard laid the foundation for Nottinghamshire`s total with a third-wicket partnership worth 135. The batsmen then found a variety of ways to give up their wickets to Kevan James who, in his 17th season of county cricket, took a career-best six for 35. Hampshire looked on course to overtake the Nottinghamshire total with Robin Smith well set. However, Smith pulled Chris Tolley to square leg as the left-arm medium pacer, like James, proceed- ed to run through the remainder of the Hampshire innings. Also like James, who began his career with Middlesex, Tolley is with his second county, having joined Nottinghamshire from Wor- cestershire at the start of this season. He has joined an outfit who batted, bowled and, significantly, fielded far better than a dismal Hampshire.
