Date-stamped : 19 Jul96 - 02:16 AXA Equity & Law League Warwickshire v Lancashire Edgbaston 16 July 1996 ====> REPORT Warwickshire join Sunday title race By Mike Beddow at Edgbaston Warwicks (212-6) bt Lancs (199-9) by 13 runs LANCASHIRE may have reached the summit of their season by winning the Benson and Hedges Cup, but for Warwickshire there is new stimulus with their move to within four points of the leaders in the AXA Equity and Law League. Neil Smith gained control of this game by topping fifty for the fifth time as a one-day opener this summer and the stranglehold was maintained by the high standard of Warwickshire`s work in the field. Trevor Penney and Dominic Ostler, the blond predators in the key areas, were involved in two run-out dismissals and four catches. Warren Hegg and Ian Austin revived Lancashire`s faltering challenge with 56 in eight overs, but on a turning surface Warwickshire held a priceless advantage after an early gallop by Smith.
