Date-stamped : 07 Jun96 - 14:18 The Universities, 1996 Oxford University v Glamorgan The Parks 1,3,4 June 1996 ====> (Day 2, 3 Jun 1996) Calm Gupte brightens up dark day By Ralph Dellor in The Parks Second day of three: Oxford Univ (196-5) trail Glamorgan (304- 6dec) by 108 runs THE Oxford innings, just like the weather, began with bright promise, only to become bleaker as the day wore on. With two hours 20 minutes lost to rain, it was not surprising that momen- tum was lost. But shining through it all was Chinmay Gupte, the Oxford captain. He shared a century opening partnership with Jon Batty, who played an array of strokes of the highest technical order to reach a fine fifty. Despite the fact that wickets began to fall at the other end and Glamorgan`s Robert Croft was always probing with his con- trolled off-spin, Gupte was completely unruffled. He moved surely towards a fifth first-class century only to be thwarted by the close of play. ====> (Day 3, 4 Jun 1996) Oxford`s hopes fade into a draw By Ralph Dellor in The Parks Oxford University (196-6 dec & 216-6) drew with Glamorgan (304-6 dec & 164-5 dec) THE final calculation for Oxford was 273 in 58 overs, and while they maintained a serious pursuit, the fall of key wickets left Glamorgan slightly more in the ascendancy at the close. Oxford elected to bat on in the morning with Chinmay Gupte 97 not out overnight. Four overs and a ball later, Gupte was bowled by Robert Croft without a run being added and he declared. Glamorgan were 53 for three when Alun Evans joined Adrian Dale. While Dale gave Charlie Lightfoot another wicket and Darren Tho- mas provided Hasnain Malik with his second, Evans - making his debut - was not out on 71 when the declaration came. Jon Batty reeled off two boundaries before being given out lbw and Gul Khan also fell lbw before Gupte and Malik consolidated. The equation then was 194 from 40, but the loss of four wickets left Will Kendall and Lightfoot batting out a draw.
