Date-stamped : 20 May96 - 10:15 20 May 1996 Old and new win England call for one-day series By Christopher Martin-Jenkins RONNIE IRANI, Mark Ealham and Alistair Brown, three men not picked by England at senior level before, will make their first appearances in the three Texaco Trophy matches against India this week. The games are at the Oval on Thursday, Headingley on Satur- day and Old Trafford on Sunday. Chris Lewis, recalled after missing virtually the whole of last season and joining Surrey from Nottinghamshire, and Matthew May- nard, flourishing in his second stint as captain of Glamorgan, have been given the chance to resurrect their international careers, although the chairman of selectors, Ray Illingworth, stressed that this was purely a "one-day selection". Irani, Ealham, Lewis, Neil Smith and Dominic Cork are all, more or less, all-rounders, a recognition, perhaps, that England`s team at the World Cup was insufficiently flexible. Eight men involved in the World Cup are omitted from this selection and the choice of Brown, Surrey`s barnstorming right-hander, reflects the need to exploit the first 15 overs when only two men are permitted outside the 30-yard circle. Ealham and Darren Gough are the two members of a team of 13 players likely to be omitted from the first match at the Oval but Illingworth said he hoped that everyone would get a game. His first decision-making meeting with his new colleagues - Mike Atherton, David Lloyd, Graham Gooch and David Graveney - took place at Nottingham on Saturday night and seems to have been entirely harmonious. It took them little more than an hour to choose their squad, of which half the time was spent debating the claims of the various all-rounders. Craig White, Adam Hollioake and Robert Croft were the other players discussed and the first two at least will again be under consideration before the team for the first Test is an- nounced in a fortnight`s time. Lewis, 28, has been selected on the strength of only eight matches for Surrey. He had to convince them of his fitness be- fore joining from Nottinghamshire only a few weeks ago. Lewis said: "Things have gone very well for me so I`m not real- ly surprised. I`m probably more surprised that I`ve played good enough cricket so early in the season to be considered and in- cluded." Illingworth said: "It`s up to him to prove himself. Everyone knows he`s got the ability." Maynard last appeared for England in all five one-day interna- tionals in the West Indies nearly 2.5 years ago but failed to reach 30 on any occasion. He said: "I`ve got a lot to prove to myself and to other people. This is a big opportunity for me." Source :: Electronic Telegraph (http.//www.telegraph.co.uk) Contributed by Shash (shs2@*.cwru.edu)
