Date-stamped : 02 May96 - 14:15 Tendulkar yearns for county game One of world`s top batsmen is waiting for invitation, says Charles Randall SACHIN TENDULKAR said yesterday he would like to return to En- glish county cricket, but he admitted he had not received an offer since his season at Yorkshire four years ago. This is strange because Tendulkar possesses that rare com- bination of dedication and charisma - not many overseas players could take the Yorkshire crowds by storm - and he ranks with Brian Lara as the world`s best batsman. The Bombay maestro, who arrived with the India tour party yes- terday, turned 23 last week and every step has been one to- wards greatness. His commercial endorsements alone, with brand names such as Pepsi-Cola, now earn him reputedly #1 million a year as India`s hottest property, and he has 38 Tests under his belt with a bat- ting average of 51.73. Despite his wealth and fame as India`s vice-captain, there has so far been no sign of the pressure that brought misery for Lara and created factions within the West Indies dressing room. Tendulkar said: "My business commitments are not distractions. It`s only because I`ve been performing well that I get these con- tracts." Yesterday morning the Indians, including eight newcomers from the 1990 tour, enjoyed some loosening nets in chilly sunshine at Lord`s. The public grief that surrounded their exit from the World Cup in Calcutta had long subsided, and their only preparation for the England tour had been relaxation. * The Indians start with a one-day match against Indian Gym- khana at Osterley, London, tomorrow.
