England in full swing

By Peter Deeley

26 July 1996

ENGLAND'S ``best day of the summer'' was the way David Lloyd summed up the first day of the Cornhill Lord's Test. India may have been beaten in the first half of the season but for the England coach this was the moment things really came together.

The dressing room last night was ``cock-a-hoop'' at reducing Pakistan to 290 for nine and captain Michael Atherton was ``delirious'' at England's position - despite losing two tosses: one for choice of ball and the other for first innings.

What particularly pleased Lloyd was that inexperience in the attack was no bar to success. Pakistan's bowlers were far more experienced in Test terms, he conceded, ``but we did not let that upset us.

``We picked an attack made for swing, yet it wasn't until late in the day it began to happen. This shows that in the end it wasn't the bowler, but the ball, that counted.

``All-round we are delighted at our performance. We have stuck doggedly to the job and theirs was a strange innings - one big partnership.''

Pakistan captain Wasim Akram could scarcely hide his delight at the evidence of swing. ``Waqar and I are both looking forward to bowling,'' was almost an understatement in the circumstances.

Inzamam-ul-Haq described his first Test century at Lord's as ``a great honour''. He said of the Salim Malik run out: ``I was screaming at him to go back but he couldn't hear because of the noise. I felt I had grounded my bat first and the umpire, Peter Willey, said, 'Salim, you are out'. ``
