The Lancashire batsman has been suffering from a bad back for the past week and, although X-rays showed that he has a curved spine, no injury has been diagnosed.

The Management have decided not to risk him, although they hope he will be fit for the three-match one-day series starting next Wednesday. Jonathan Powell came through practice yesterday to report that his septic spinning finger has now healed. He will definitely play tomorrow.
