Pakistan aim to make sweep

KARACHI, March 16: Pakistan A take on India A in the final one-dayer at the National Stadium on Tuesday with an ambition to make a clean sweep of the three-match limited-overs games series.

After having lost the four-Test series 1-0 at Karachi last week, the home side came back strongly to win the first one-day at Sheikhupura by six wickets. They then took an impregnable 2-0 lead at Lahore when they triumphed again by six wickets.

On current, Pakistan can only be beaten by complacency.

A clean sweep of the one-day series would only heal some wounds which the home team received following a crushing 58-run defeat here last week. Despite the untiring effort by the Pakistan bowlers, it was the batting line-up that caused embarrassment.

The followers of the game had expected much improved performance from the stroke-makers out of whom five had played the highest level of cricket and the sixth had been the Under-19 captain.

But as the Pakistanis are known for their unpredictability, the batsmen struck form with Akhtar Sarfaraz blasting an exquisite 90 at Sheikhupura and then Salim Elahi hammering a magnificent unbeaten 89 at Lahore.

With Pakistan retaining an unchanged team, the home trio lead by Shahid Afridi, who rose to fame with quickest one-day international century, is due for some quick runs. Some fire works are also expected from Basit Ali and Hasan Raza.

Pakistan captain Aqib Javed said his team was not buoyant after winning the one-day series. ``Yes, it feels great to win the series but one match is still left. There will be no celebrations in the camp until the series is won 3-0.''

``There are always one or two major contributions in a game. Akhtar and Salim did it in the previous two matches respectively and I expect the others to make it on Tuesday,'' Javed said, adding: ``But the two (Akhtar and Salim) can't be exonerated off their duties.''

The discarded Pakistan Test seamer attributed the earlier successes due to allround effort of the team. ``Every individual did his job and we won.

``Nothing can compensate, even a sweep in the one-day series, for the loss in the Test series. We will have to live with that until we don't win it (series) next time we play,'' said Javed.

Both the teams preferred complete rest instead of light training. But the home team suffered a shock when they were not lodged in a five-star hotel. They were booked in a three-star hotel because the PCB failed to get their booking in the five-star hotel earlier with the result that when they arrived at the hotel, there were no rooms available.

The wicket prepared for the game appears to be hard and batsmen's paradise. This means that the match could be a tall scoring one.
