Date-stamped : 19 Oct97 - 06:25 final 1 match report Zimbabwe beat Kenya by 83 runs From Shaun Orange in Nairobi Zimbabwe put one hand on the Trust Bank Tri-Nations cricket cup at the Gymkhana Sports Club here yesterday when they beat Kenya by 83 runs in the first of the best of three finals when rain brought an early end to the match. Skipper Alistair Campbell won the toss on a bright sunny morning and elected to bat, after which they put on 281-8 in their 50 overs. In reply the hosts reached 172-7 in the 40th over when the rain came down and the match was called off. Keyna, for their part, needed to be on 255 at this stage to upset Zimbabwe and fell short dismally, while always well behind the asking rate set by the southern Africans. Zimbabwe made a flying start when Grant and Andy Flower put on 154 for the first wicket, but then collapsed miserably before Campbell chipped in with a half century of his own. Grant Flower was the first to go when he was bowled by Steve Tikolo while playing forward. The right-hander scored 69 off 75 balls, while Andy also fell in the 27th over when caught behind. Campbell made good when he steadied the innings somewhat and brought a measure of respectability to their total with 51. He was out to a simple catch by Tony Suji at backward point. Thomas Odoyo bagged three wickets for 41 to emerge the best in Kenya's bowling attack, while Guy Whittall and Grant Flower took two each in the afternoon before the rain came. Team manager Babu Meman said they were unlikely to change the Zimbabwean side for today's second final at the same venue, although this might be altered should the wicket dictate so.
