KARACHI, March 7:

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is waiting for a clarification from the United Cricket Board of South Africa (UCBSA) on the number of players allowed for the tri-nation series starting there from April 3.

Besides Pakistan and hosts South Africa, world champions Sri Lanka are taking part in the tournament whose final will be played on April 21.

The Chief Executive of the Pakistan Cricket Board, Majid Khan, said until this was clarified, he was not in a position to comment if any players would be flown for the one-dayers.

``We already have 17 players there. Until we are told how many players we can have, how can I say whether we will or will not be able to strengthen the side for one-dayers,'' he said from Lahore.

Majid said his board has already written to the South African authorities adding that the playing terms with him don't spell out if a team was entitled to 14 players.

``It is not necessary that each team is restricted to 14 players. We can have even 15 or even 17. It's a matter of clarification,'' he added.

However, informed sources have said three players were likely to return from Africa. Paceman Fazl-i-Akbar is set to board the flight back from Zimbabwe while the names of the two players were still not confirmed. It is being anticipated that Yousuf Yohanna and Mohammad Wasim will also join Akbar while the only change for the one-dayers may be of Shahid Afridi.

On the appointment of a new chairman of selectors, Majid Khan said it was the prerogative of the Executive Council. ``The new chairman will only be appointed when the Council meets,'' he remarked.

The Council meeting is unlikely to be held before March 20 as Chairman of the cricket board, Khalid Mahmood, left for South Africa this morning. From South Africa, he will accompany the team to Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, and will watch the first Test of the two-Test series to be played there between March 14 and 18.

About the changes in the team for the one-dayers, sources said they can be made with the consent of the two selectors, Zaheer Abbas and Shafiq Ahmad, and the tour selection committee.
