Chanderpaul injury weakens West Indian challenge
26 September 1997
from our Sixes Correspondents, Duane Pettet & Rohan Chandran

An unusual injury to West Indian star Shivnarine Chanderpaul has given promising young batsman Floyd Reifer, who recently broke into the West Indian Test side, making his debut against Sri Lanka, a chance to make a name for himself in the Sixes arena.

Chanderpaul was advised to withdraw from the tournament last night by doctors after apparently injuring his foot stepping on broken glass. Whilst the injury is not serious, it was felt that the risk of aggravating it was too great.

The loss of one of the world's leading batsmen is a tremendous blow to the West Indian side, seeking to repeat last years triumph. However Reifer is also a highly touted young left hander, and should prove a very valuable, if somewhat unknown, quantity.
