Zimbabwe, S. Africa win in Double-Wicket contest

LAHORE, April 27: Zimbabwe and South Africa managed to score close wins on second day of the second International Double-Wicket Floodlit Cricket Tournament at the Qadhafi Stadium on Monday.

In first match of the evening, Zimbabwe beat New Zealand by five runs.

New Zealand won the toss but asked the Zimbabwe pair to bat first. A fine knock by Alistair Campbell helped Zimbabwe hit up a total of 67 for 4. Thus Zimbabwe had plus score of 27. Campbell scored 44 on 28 balls with the help of one big six and five boundaries. However, Campbell was out twice. Heath Streak scored 21 on as many balls but was out twice. Chris Harris got the Zimbabwe batsmen thrice.

Needing only 28 runs for a win, the Kiwi pair of Astle and Harris batted very poorly. Astle scored 23 on 19 balls with the help of two big sixes and one four. But Astle was out twice. Harris scored 37 on 29 deliveries and was also out twice. Harris hit six boundaries. The Kiwi pair scored 62 but due to being dismissed four times, it could muster plus 22 runs and tasted a five run defeat. Heath Streak gave away 19 runs and Campbell 41 runs, claiming two wickets, each. Campbell was declared 'Man-of-the-Match'.

South Africa also scored a narrow 3-run victory over Kenya to maintain its winning streak in the tournament and qualify for the semi-finals. After winning the toss, the South African asked the Kenyans to bat first.

Batting sensibly, the Kenyan pair scored 58 for one and set a target for the opponents of 48 runs for win. Steve Tikola scored 40 on 27 balls, hitting a six and five boundaries. However, he was out once. Thomas Odoyo scored 12 on 21 balls. Adrian Kuiper claimed one wicket, conceding 35 runs.

The South African pair batted methodically to coast home to a win by three runs. South Africa scored 61 for one. Kuiper scored 25 on 24 balls with the help of three boundaries. Fanie de Villiers hit five boundaries in his score of 28, collected on 24 balls. Fannie hit five boundaries. He was out once. Fannie de Villiers won the 'Man-of-the-Match' award.
