England make final

ENGLAND have qualified for the final of the World Under-19 Cup, to be played at the Wanderers ground in Johannesburg on Sunday, in spite of India's five-wicket victory over Pakistan in Durban.

India bowled Pakistan out for 188 and had to reach their target in 28.2 overs or less. At one stage, with their captain, Amit Pagnis, and Mohammed Kaif going well, they were up with the required run-rate. But when Pagnis, having scored 52 from 42 balls, lost his wicket, the Indians gave up their pursuit of a final place and settled for a comfortable win.

England thus won their pool by virtue of a superior net run-rate from Australia and India.

South Africa are the likely opponents for England but they must beat Sri Lanka today in Durban to be sure of reaching the final.

Should they lose, there will be a three-way tie between themselves, Sri Lanka and New Zealand, with the net run-rate coming into play again.

The beleaguered New Zealand cricket team hope a change of name will bring a change of form.

When the Kiwis play Zimbabwe and Australia next month, they will take the field as the as the Clear New Zealand Black Caps. Clear are a New Zealand telecommunications company.
