CRICKET: Seven of West Indies' youth players in South Africa for the Youth World Cup are over age and will not participate in the competition, according to a report out of Antigua.

The names of the players were not disclosed but it is understood that the list includes Jamaicans Ryan Cunningham.

However, it is understood that South Africa may allow the seven over-age players to stay there and play for the West Indies Youth against domestic teams, although they cannot represent the region in the Youth World Cup.

As a result of the situation in South Africa, Jamaica's Nortel batsman Christopher Gayle and fast bowler Wade Allen have been given invitations to join the West Indies Youth team.

Gayle, represented Jamaica with distinction in the 1996 regional Nortel Youth tournament and also Young West Indies in the Youth series against Pakistan later that year.

In five matches and eight innings, the 18-year-old Gayle scored 203 runs with a top score of 91 against the Windward Islands and an average of 25.37.

Allen, in the Nortel competition last August, captured 10 wickets for 143 runs for an average of 14.30 with a best of five for 28 against Barbados.
