PCB media release on Mohammad Akram and Saqlain Mushtaq

Press Release of PCB dated 12 February 1998

We reproduce below a media release from Dr Ali Bacher, Managing Director, United Cricket Board of South Africa.

"It is with deep sadness and regret that I have to announce that two members of the touring Pakistan Cricket Team, Saqlain Mushtaq and Mohammad Akram were mugged near their hotel in Sandton last night.

Akram has gone for X-ray and treatment of lacerations on his hand, and his place in the first test against South Africa at the Wanderers is in jeopardy.

Mushtaq is shaken but uninjured.

The mugging took place as the two players were crossing the street from the Sandton Sun Hotel to Sandton Square to have an evening meal when a car stopped next to them and they were mugged by the occupants.

Personal belongings, including their wallets were stolen. Sandton Police are investigating.

Extra security has been arranged for the team, and we are sure this will not happen again.

On behalf of the United Cricket Board of South Africa, I would like to express sincere regret to the players, the team and the Pakistan Cricket Board for this act of thuggery.

It comes at a time when the UCB and the Pakistan Cricket Board are enjoying warm and cordial relations, and building strong cricket bonds between the two countries.

This dastardly act will only strengthen the UCB's determination to ensure the two countries go forward together in cricket."

The Chief Executive PCB, Mr Majid Khan, spoke to the Captain of the Pakistan Cricket Team, Mr Rashid Latif at 4:15 PM today i.e. 12/2/98 about the current situation and the fitness of the players. Rashid Latif informed that due to neck injury he may not be able to play in the first test match. He also informed that due to an unfortunate incident of mugging the two players namely, Mohammad Akram and Saqlain Mushtaq are also doubtful starters for the first test match. It may be noted that PCB has sent a squad of 15 players to South Africa.
