By Our Sports Reporter

20 January 1998

KARACHI, Jan 19:The touring Malaysian team brought about a sensational collapse of the Ideal cricket club who staged a great fight back recovering from 33 for six to win by three wickets in the 12th Karachi Gymkhana Ramazan Cricket Festival here on Monday afternoon at the KG ground.

After restricting the Malaysians for 138 for eight in the allotted 25 overs, the Ideal Club, chased the victory target, on a disappointing note when they suffered heavily losing their early six wickets for 33 in only six overs.

Medium pace bowler Rohan Selvaurtnam, bowling to a good line of length, sent back three top order batsmen before Mohammad Ali Sabri, batting at number four, halted the collapse in a 76-run sixth wicket partnership with Tanveer Ahmed.

Sabri batted confidently and aggressively to steer the Ideal Club from the deep water, slamming eleven delightful boundaries in his authoritative knock of 73 off 46 balls. Sabri, who was declared Man-of-the-Match was bowled by medium pacer Suresh and the Ideal were 109 for seven.

Tanveer Ahmed continued to bat in a commanding way and his 36-ball 34 runs unbeaten knock, which was studded with 4 fours, also made a positive contribution when his team achieved the victory target of 139 for seven in 20.3 overs. Hyder Ali was 4 not out.

Rohan bowled well to bag three wickets for 28 and Suresh dismissed two for 35.

The Malaysians, who won the toss and batted first, gave an improved performance in their third and last Group C match by scoring 138 for eight in the restricted 25 overs.

Opener Suresh Singh thrashed the attack to complete a half century in the 55-run second wicket partnership with Suresh Navartnam before he fell to Mansoor Beg. Suresh Singh compiled his well-deserved 50 that had no boundary. Suresh Nayartnam, who was also dismissed by Mansoor, slammed 2 fours in his 27, The other batsmen went cheaply Ideal Club skipper Fawad Ijaz Khan, the leftarm spinner, bowled well to capture three for 25 and Mansoor Beg had two for 14.
