By Our Sports Reporter

21 January 1998

KARACHI, Jan 20: Test middle order batsman Inzamam-ul-Haq hammered a week Karachi Gymkhana attack to hit a quickfire 72 for the defending champions Mian Azmat Professionals as they registered for their second consecutive victory by a convincing margin of 55 runs in the 12th Karachi Gymkhana Ramazan Cricket Festival here on Tuesday at the KG ground.

Formidable MAP,assisted by three current Test cricketers and captained by former Test opening batsman Mansoor Akhtar, compiled 205 for eight in the restricted 25 overs when they were sent in to bat first by toss winner Karachi Gymkhana.

Test cricketer Azhar Mahmood and Mansoor Akhtar opened the MAP innings and the 34-run first wicket stand was broken by right arm medium pacer Sohail Samana when he removed Mansoor for nine. Ten runs later one down Atiq-uz-Zaman also fell to Sohail with MAP at 44 for two Azhar Mahmood, was in a punishing mood and slammed half a dozen delightful boundaries in his polished 33 off 16 balls before medium pacer Saqib Shaikh bowled the opener. The MAP were three down for 78.

Inzamam-ul-Haq and Ghaffar Kazmi took control of gymkhana attack and the fourth wicket partnership flourished as Inzimam turned ruthless in handling the bowler. Inzamam entertained a big crowd by his lustily hitting all over the ground.

Hard-hitting Inzamam declared Man-of-the-Match crossed the boundary majestically seven times and hit two mighty sixes. His whirlwind 51-ball 72 runs innings finally ended when he was clean bowled by Saqib who secured the second Test wicket, earlier also by removing Azhar Mahmood. The fourth wicket stand was worth 84 off 71 balls.

Ghaffar Kazmi made a solid contribution of 54 off 50 balls and his knock was studded with five fine boundaries.

The MAP innings ended at 205 for eight in the restricted overs. Medium pacers Sohail Samana (2 for 27), Jam Niaz (2 for 48) and Saqib Shaikh ( 2 for 50 ) were the wicket-takers.

In their turn the Karachi Gymkhana, after a 44-run opening stand between Khalid Ali and Khurram Tufail (15) were in trouble when they lost their three wickets quickly for the addition of only ten runs as they were 54 for four. Khalid hit 4 fours in his 25.

However, a defiant 60-run fifth wicket stand between Sohail Shajani and Jam Niaz halted a possible collapse. Sohail slammed two towering sixes and a boundary in his responsible 34 and Jam Niaz 24-ball 34 runs knock contained 3 fours and a six as the Gymkhana consumed their allotted overs for 150 for seven.
