Date-stamped : 25 Oct97 - 10:16 Day 1 report from Dawn Aqib Javed reminds selectors once again By Our Sports Reporter KARACHI, Oct 24: Discarded paceman Aqib Javed captured four wickets, including the prized scalp of Salim Malik, to serve another reminder to the national selectors about his present form. Javed, who had a match haul of 10 wickets for 108 runs in the previous game, conceded 47 runs from 21 hostile overs to help Allied Bank demolish Habib Bank for 152 runs in less than 60 overs on the opening day of the four-day Patron's Trophy at the UBL Sports Complex. When stumps were drawn on Friday, Allied Bank were 46 for the loss of Mohammad Nawaz (14). Iqbal Salim (18) and Bilal Rana (11) will resume ABL's innings on Saturday. Besides Salim Malik, Aqib Javed's other three victims included two former internationals - Shakeel Ahmad and Moinul Atiq - and a current Pakistan A batsman - Farhan Adil. Shakeel Ahmad and Salim Malik had come to this match after scoring centuries in the previous match against National Bank. Javed was well supported by Ataur Rahman who snapped up three wickets for 53 runs and Humayun Fida Husain, who justified his selection over Aamir Nazir with three wickets for 17 runs. But it was Aqib Javed who dominated the proceedings after starting the rot by having both the openers, Shakeel Ahmad (28) and Moinul Atiq (7). He then got former Pakistan captain Salim Malik in the first slips and completed his tally of wickets by accounting for Farhan Adil in front of the wickets. Javed, who bowled almost unchanged in the first session, could have easily registered another five-wicket haul had he not been suffering from a stomach upset. That trouble forced him to skip the session after tea which was taken with Habib Bank on 138 for eight. Ataur Rahman also bowled with fire and venom while Humayun Fida Husain's deceptive and unorthodox bowling action troubled the Habib Bank batsmen. For Habib Bank, Shakeel Ahmad and Majid Saeed finished as joint to-scorers with 28 each. Shakeel hit a solitary boundary in his 89-ball innings while Majid struck two fours in his 82-ball innings. But the all-important innings came from skipper Akram Raza who hit a rapid 27 from 34 balls with five boundaries to guide Habib Bank to 152 which looked a difficult score after they were reduced to 120 for eight from 86 for three. Day 3 report Aqib Javed gets another 10-wicket haul By Our Sports Reporter KARACHI, Oct 26: Rejected paceman Aqib Javed captured his second straight match haul of 10 wickets to bowl Allied Bank to a comprehensive victory by an innings and 29 runs over Habib Bank on the penultimate day of the four-day Patron's Trophy match at the UBL Sports Complex here on Sunday. Javed grabbed six wickets for 59 runs after his four wickets for 47 runs in the first innings as Habib Bank crashed out for 196, some 45 minutes after tea. Habib Bank, who had scored 152, needed 225 runs to avert an innings defeat after Allied Bank had scored a mammoth 377 in their only innings. Aqib Javed turned out to be almost unplayable when he bowled with hostility and swung the ball viciously. He was at his brilliant best in his second spell in which he claimed four wickets for 37 runs. In that spell, he accounted for Mujahid Jamsheed (49), Majid Saeed (22), Salim Malik (4) and Asadullah Butt (0). In the third spell, he returned to break the dangerous looking seventh wicket 67-run stand between Farhan Adil (42) and Tahir Rasheed (44). He got the scalps of Adil who became one of the three victims of Rashid Latif behind the wickets. In the last two matches, Aqib Javed has taken 20 wickets for 214 runs. Last season, he snapped up 60 odd wickets. In the last six Tests he played for Pakistan two years ago, he finished as the leading wicket-taker with 29 wickets. Aqib received valuable support from Humayun Fida Husain who once again took three wickets conceding 53 runs. The Habib Bank batsmen were all at sea against Aqib Javed and only Mujahid Jamsheed, Farhan Adil and Tahir Rasheed offered any significant resistance. Salim Malik, for the second time in the match, fell to Aqib Javed behind the wickets. Earlier, Allied Bank resumed their first innings at 370 for eight and last just 10 balls to be bowled out for 377. Shakeel Khan, who had seven wickets yesterday, added the wicket of Aqib Javed to finish with eight wickets for 74 runs.
