KARACHI, March 18: The 17th edition of the National One-day Championship was getting exciter and closer after a few fancied teams suffered unexpected defeats on Tuesday.

The biggest upset of the day was the defeat of defending champions Allied Bank who lost to Khan Research Laboratory in a Pool D match. That put KRL on top of the table with the bankers on second spot.

However, in the same Pool match, points were equally shared by Peshawar and Islamabad as their match was washed out after just eight overs.

On Thursday, Allied Bank will meet Peshawar at Arbab Niaz Stadium while KRL take on Rawalpindi at latter's ground and hope to qualify for the second round of the tournament.

Another upset result was recorded in Pool B at Gujranwala where the home team beat Agricultural Development Bank of Pakistan ADBP. That win put Gujranwala on top of the table to relegate the bankers to third. The second spot is claimed by PIA to clinch a comfortable nine-wicket win over Malaysia.

On Thursday, Gujranwala meet PIA at Jinnah Stadium, Sialkot, need not to say the winners qualifies for the second round. In another Pool B match, Lahore take on Malaysia at the Gadhafi Stadium.

There was also an unexpected result in Pool C where Karachi Whites beat WAPDA. However, that pool is perhaps the most intriguing one with four teams, barring Multan, sharing the top slot with four points.

Nevertheless, the situation is billed to clear on Thursday when Karachi Whites meet Multan at Sheikhupura Stadium and Faisalabad take on National Bank at Bohranwali ground, Faisalabad.

As far as Pool A is concerned, there are still no hiccups though Bangladesh's impressive victory has certainly put them as firm contenders as one of the two qualifiers for the second round.

Bangladesh will be resting on Thursday with Karachi Blues meeting Customs at the UBL Sports Complex and Habib Bank facing Bahawalpur at the National Stadium.
