Date-stamped : 28 Oct97 - 18:20 28th October 1997 Board to line the pockets of Hansie's heroes By Iqbal Khan The South African cricketers hit the half-a-million rand (US$ 110 000) jackpot for their 1-0 series victory after their spectacular 53-run win over Pakistan in the final test at the Iqbal stadium in Faisalabad yesterday. Within minutes of South Africa's outstanding win, Ali Bacher, managing director of the United Cricket Board, was on the line congratulating Hansie Cronje and his band for their efforts. And he confirmed that the UCB were willing to pay out the R500 000 bonus offered to the team for having won the 3-match series against one of the best Test playing nations in the world. Bacher also announced that the UCB were to double team's match fee of R11 250 (US$ 2345). "It was a magnificent effort and they need to be rewarded for it. Few teams go to the subcontinent and win a Test match, let alone a Test series. Hansie and his men have done South Africa proud," said Bacher from Johannesburg. As a further incentive, the UCB will pay out a bonus of R200 000 (US$42 000) to the team if they win the quadrangular series which features the home side, West Indies and Sri Lanka. If the team reaches the final but loses, the UCB will still offer R100 000 to the players for their efforts. Source:: The Star Contributed by The Management (help@cricinfo.com)
