If during a day/night match, or a day match, if in the opinion of the Umpires, natural light is deteriorating to an unfit level, they may authorise the Ground Authority to use the available artificial lighting so that the match can continue in acceptable conditions.
Matches shall commence at the times as set out above with a meal interval which will normally be between innings. The duration and time of the interval can be varied in the case of an interrupted match.
4.2 INTERVAL BETWEEN INNINGS
The innings of the team batting second shall not commence before the scheduled time for commencement of the second session unless the team batting first has completed its innings at least 30 minutes prior to the scheduled interval, in which case a 10 minute break will occur and the team batting second will commence its innings and the interval will occur as scheduled.
Where play is delayed or interrupted the Umpires will reduce the length of the interval as follows:-
Time Lost | Interval |
Up to 60 minutes | 30 minutes | Between 60 and 120 minutes | 20 minutes | More than 120 minutes | 10 minutes |
4.3 EXTRA TIME
In a match where the start is delayed or play is suspended, the hours of play may be extended up to a scheduled maximum of 60 minutes.
4.4 INTERVALS FOR DRINKS
One drinks break of 5 minutes duration per session is permitted. The provisions of Law 16.6 shall be strictly observed except that under conditions of extreme heat the Umpires may permit an extra interval for drinks.
An individual player may be given a drink either on the boundary edge or at the fall of a wicket, on the field, provided that no playing time is wasted. No other drinks shall be taken onto the field without the permission of the Umpires. Any player taking drinks onto the field shall be dressed in proper cricket attire.
5. APPOINTMENT OF UMPIRES
Umpires for all fixtures will be appointed by the SACUA in consultation with the UCBSA. Three Umpires will be appointed to all matches scheduled to be televised wherein the TV Umpire shall officiate in regard to TV replays, as provided for in these conditions. (Refer Third Umpire/TV replays).
6. LENGTH OF INNINGS
6.1 UNINTERRUPTED MATCHES
(a) Each team shall bat for 45 (6-ball overs) unless all out earlier. A team shall not be permitted to declare its innings closed.
(b) If the team fielding first fails to bowl the required number of overs by the scheduled time for cessation of the first session, play shall continue until the required number of overs has been bowled.
Unless otherwise determined by the Referee (or in his absence, the Umpires) the innings of the team batting second shall be limited to the same number of overs bowled by it, at the scheduled time for cessation of the first session. The over in progress at the scheduled cessation time shall count as a completed over.
Under these circumstances, the commencement of the second session shall be rescheduled to make provision for an interval of 30 minutes duration, or as determined in Clause 4.2 in the event of time lost.
(c) If the team batting first is all out and the last wicket falls at or after the scheduled time for the interval, the innings of the team batting second shall be limited to the same number of overs bowled to the team batting first at the scheduled time for the interval (the over in which the last wicket falls to count as a complete over).
The Referee may adjust the reduction in the number of overs to be bowled by the team bowling second if, after consultation with the Umpires he is (or in his absence, the Umpires are) of the opinion that events beyond the control of the bowling team prevented that team from bowling the required number of overs by the scheduled time for cessation of the innings of the team batting first.
(d) If the team batting first is dismissed in less than 45 overs, the team batting second shall be entitled to bat for 45 overs except as provided in (c) above.
(e) If the team fielding second fails to bowl 45 overs or the number of overs as provided in 6.1 (b), (c) or (d) by the scheduled cessation time, the hours of play shall be extended until the required number of overs has been bowled or a result achieved.
6.2 DELAYED OR INTERRUPTED MATCHES
6.2.1 General
(a) The object shall always be to rearrange the number of overs so that both teams have the opportunity of batting for the same number of overs.
A minimum 20 overs have to be bowled to the side batting second to constitute a match subject to the provisions of Clause 6.1 (b).
The calculation of the number of overs to be bowled shall be based on an average rate of 16 overs per hour in the total time available for play. The first 60 minutes of playing time lost shall not be taken into account, and the hours of play shall be extended up to a maximum of 60 minutes. If a reduction of the number of overs is required, any recalculation must not cause the match to be rescheduled to finish earlier than the original cessation time. This time may be extended to allow for one extra over for both teams to be added if required.
(b) If the team fielding second fails to bowl the required number of overs by the scheduled cessation time, the hours of play shall be extended until the overs have been bowled or a result achieved
(c) The team batting second shall not bat for a greater number of overs than the team batting first unless the latter has been all out in less than the agreed number of overs.
6.2.2 Delay or Interruption to the Innings of the Team Batting First
(a) If the number of overs of the team batting first is reduced, a fixed time will be specified for the completion of the first session, as calculated by applying the provisions of Clauses 4.2 and 6.2.1 (a).
(b) If the team fielding first fails to bowl the required number of overs by the scheduled time for cessation of the first session, play shall continue until the required number of overs has been bowled, and Clause 6.1 (b) shall apply.
(c) If the team fielding first is all out and the last wicket falls at or after the scheduled time for the interval Clause 6.1 (c) shall apply.
6.2.3 Delay or Interruption to the Innings of the Team Batting Second
(a) If it is not possible for the team batting second to have the opportunity of batting for the same number of overs as the team batting first, the overs to be bowled shall be reduced at the rate of one over per 3 ¾ minutes of the actual playing time lost in excess of 60 minutes.
NOTE: Umpires will notify the Home Authority of the time of resumption of play, following any delay or suspension, immediately they have reached a decision. The Home Authority will be responsible for notifying the decision of the Umpires immediately to Broadcasters, Press and the Public.
7. RESTRICTIONS ON THE PLACEMENT OF FIELDSMEN
Two semi circles shall be drawn on the field of play. The semi circles have as their centre the middle stump at either end of the pitch. The radius of each of the semi circles is 27,5 metres. The ends of each semi circle are joined to the other by a straight line drawn on the field on the same side of the pitch.
The field restriction area should be marked by continuous painted white lines or 'dots' at 4,5 metre intervals, each 'dot' to be covered by a white plastic or rubber (but not metal) disc measuring 18 cm. in diameter.
At the instant of delivery, there may not be more than five fieldsmen on the leg side.
For the first 15 overs only two fieldsmen are permitted to be outside the 27,5 metre field restriction marking at the instant of delivery. For the remaining overs only five fieldsmen are permitted to be outside the field restriction marking at the instant of delivery
Two inner circles shall be drawn on the field of play. The circles have as their centres, the centre point of the popping crease at either end of the pitch. The radius of each of the circles is 13,72 metres. The field restriction area should be marked by 'dots'. The segment of the circles reserved for the slip positions shall not be demarcated. (Refer attached Appendix B).
In the first 15 overs there must be a minimum of two stationary fieldsmen within the 13.72 metres field restriction of the striker at the instant of delivery. The two stationary fieldsmen may be permitted to stand deeper than 13,72 metres (in the undemarcated area) provided only that they are standing in orthodox slip and leg-slip positions.
If, in the opinion of the Umpire, a stationary fielder is standing in a run saving, as opposed to an authentic close catching position, the Umpire shall instruct him to take up his position within the 13,72 metres field restriction.
Where play is delayed or interrupted affecting the innings of either team and the total number of overs available is reduced, the number of overs in regard to field restrictions shall be reduced proportionately in the ratio of 15:45 (33%) in accordance with the table below. Fractions are to be ignored in all calculations re the number of overs.
Total overs in innings | No. of overs for which field restrictions will apply |
44-45 | 15 |
41-43 | 14 |
38-40 | 13 |
35-37 | 12 |
32-34 | 11 |
29-31 | 10 |
26-28 | 9 |
23-25 | 8 |
20-22 | 7 |
In the event of an infringement, the square leg Umpire shall call and signal no ball.
8. NUMBER OF OVERS PER BOWLER
No bowler shall bowl more than 9 (6 ball) overs in an innings.
In a delayed or interrupted match where the overs are reduced for both teams or for the team bowling second, no bowler may bowl more than one-fifth of the total overs allowed. This restriction shall not apply to the team fielding second where the provisions of Clause 6.1(b) have been applied.
Where the total overs is not divisible by 5, one additional over shall be allowed to the maximum number per bowler necessary to make up the balance.
In the event of a bowler breaking down and being unable to complete an over, the remaining balls will be bowled by another bowler. Such part of an over will count as a full over only in so far as each bowler's limit is concerned.
The scoreboard shall show the total number of overs bowled and the number of overs bowled by each bowler.
9. NO BALL
Clauses 25 (a), (c), (d) and (e) of the SuperSport Series shall be replaced by the following:-
(a) A bowler shall be allowed to bowl one fast short pitched delivery in an over.
(b) A fast short pitched delivery is defined as a ball which passes or would have passed above shoulder height of the batsman standing upright at the crease.
(c) In the event of the bowler bowling more than one fast short pitched delivery in an over, either Umpire shall call and signal no ball on each occasion only in cases where the batsman has not made contact with the ball, with either his bat or hand holding the bat.
A penalty of one run for a fast short pitched no ball shall be scored if no runs are made otherwise. A fast short pitched no ball shall not be reckoned as one of the over.
(d) In the event of the bowler bowling more than one fast short pitched delivery in an over, the Umpire shall not call no ball in cases where the batsman has made contact with the ball with his bat or hand holding the bat, and whatever runs result, shall be added to his score.
The above regulation is not a substitute for Law 42.8 which umpires are able to apply at any time.
NOTE: The provision of one allowable fast short pitched delivery per over shall be superseded by Clause 10 - Wide Bowling, in cases where a delivery passes outside the reach of the striker.
10. WIDE BOWLING - JUDGING A WIDE
Umpires are instructed to apply a very strict and consistent interpretation in regard to this Law in order to prevent negative bowling wide of the wicket.
Any offside or legside delivery which in the opinion of the Umpire does not give the batsman a reasonable opportunity to score shall be called a wide. As a guide, on the leg side a ball landing clearly outside the leg stump going further away shall be called wide.
11. THE BALL
White Kookaburra "Turf" balls shall be used in all matches, including day matches. The Home Province shall provide at least 6 new balls which shall be presented by the Umpires to the fielding captain before each innings for selection of the balls to be used in that innings. The Home Province shall provide at least 6 used balls, of the same make and type as the new balls, for use as replacements where necessary. In accordance with Law 5.2 all balls used in matches shall be approved by the Umpires and Captains before the start of the match.
Each fielding team shall have two new balls for its innings. The balls shall be used for alternate overs thus allowing opportunity to dry the ball between overs where this is desirable.
In the event of a ball becoming wet and soggy as a result of play continuing in inclement weather or it being affected by dew, or a white ball becoming significantly discoloured and in the opinion of the Umpires being unfit for play, the ball may be replaced for a ball that has had a similar amount of wear, even though it has not gone out of shape.
Either bowler or batsman may raise the matter with the Umpires and the Umpires decision as to a replacement or otherwise will be final.
12. THE RESULT
12.1 A result can be achieved only if both teams have had the opportunity of batting for at least 20 overs, subject to the provisions of Clauses 6.1(b) and 6.2.2 (b) unless one team has been all out in less than 20 overs or unless the team batting second scores enough runs to win in less than 20 overs.
All matches in which both teams have not had an opportunity of batting for a minimum of 20 overs, shall be declared no result.
12.2 In matches in which both teams have had the opportunity of batting for the agreed number of overs, subject to the provisions of Clauses 6.1 (b) and 6.2.2 (b) the team scoring the higher number of runs shall be the winner. If the scores are equal, the result shall be a tie and no account shall be taken of the number of wickets which have fallen.
12.3 Delayed or Interrupted matches - Calculation of the Target Score
See Appendix A.
13. POINTS
Win | : | 2 |
Tie or No Result | : | 1 |
Loss | : | 0 |
14. STANDARD BANK LEAGUE COMPETITION - FINAL LOG PLACINGS
Should two or more teams finish with an equal number of points, the position in the log will be decided as follows:
(i) The team/s with the greater number of wins will be placed in the higher position/s.
(ii) If still equal, the teams having both equal wins and equal points shall be placed in a separate (hypothetical) league, and the points accumulated against each other during the league match/es shall determine the positioning of such teams in such separate league and accordingly in the log.
(iii) If still equal, the higher net run rate in the league matches shall determine the positioning of such teams in such separate league and accordingly in the log. In a match declared 'no result', run rate is not applicable.
A team's net run rate is calculated by deducting from the average runs per over scored by that team throughout the competition, the average runs per over scored against that team throughout the competition.
In the event of a team being all out in less than its full quota of overs, the calculation of its net run rate shall be based on the full quota of overs to which it would have been entitled and not on the number of overs in which the team was dismissed.
NOTE: In the event of an interrupted match in which the team batting second has completed their innings, the runs applicable for net run-rate for the team batting first will be the revised target minus 1, and the overs applicable will be the number of overs allocated to the team batting second. In the event of an interrupted match in which the team batting second has not completed their innings, the runs applicable for net run-rate for the team batting first will be the comparative score calculated from Table 1 (see Appendix A), based on the number of overs received by the team batting second, and the overs applicable will be the number of overs actually received by the team batting second. In all interrupted matches the runs and overs applicable for the team batting second will be that actually obtained.
15. STANDARD BANK CUP COMPETITION
The matches will be played in keeping with the general regulations except as set out hereunder:
(i) Conditions 3, 6.2.1 (a) and 12 shall apply, except that a result can be achieved only if both teams have had the opportunity of batting for at least 25 overs, unless one team has been out in less than 25 overs or unless the team batting second scores enough runs to win in less than 25 overs.
(ii) Two days have been allocated to each match in which an unfinished match will be continued on the second day commencing at 10hr00.
(a) In the event of a match not commencing by 20hr00 (Day/Night Match) or 14hr25 (Sunday Televised Match) on the first day, play on that day will be abandoned, and the match will be started as a 45 over match on the second day.

(c) In the event of an innings of the team batting first being concluded as a 45 over innings unless all out earlier, and after having commenced the innings of the team batting second as a 45 over innings and less than 25 overs have been completed when no further play is possible on the first day, the innings will be continued on the second day in which the balance of the 45 overs not completed on the first day will be bowled on the second day.
(d) If it is not possible to complete a match in which the innings of either side has been reduced on the first day, whatever overs remain will be bowled on the second day.
(iii) The Umpires can at their sole discretion, continue play to (23hr20 - Day/Night match) or (17hr45 - Sunday televised match) on the first day, or 17hr30 on the second day, to ensure that a result is achieved. If at the specified cut-off times as listed above, there are not more than 5 overs to be bowled or not more than 40 runs to be scored, the match may be continued until a result is achieved or the players leave the field due to inclement weather conditions.
(iv) In the event of inclement weather conditions on the second day, the official cut- off time for the match to be discontinued shall be based on a rescheduled cessation time of 17hr30, wherein the calculation of the number of overs to be bowled shall be based on an average rate of 16 overs per hour in the time available for play.
15.1 Quarter-Finals and Semi-Finals
In the event of the result being inconclusive after the second day, i.e. a 'tie' or 'no result' match, the UCBSA shall reschedule a date on which the match is to be replayed.
