NEWLANDS, Cape Town, March 21 - THE Sri Lankan cricketers suffered a severe setback in their campaign to undo the South Africans when 'hit man' Chaminda Vaas was declared unfit to do any further bowling on tour.

Vaas on whom a tremendous responsibility rested to carry the attack to the Protea batsmen, along with off-spinner Muttiah Muralidaran, damaged his ankle while running up to bowl.

But Vaas gamely obliged whenever he was called on to bowl. But not wanting to damage his ankle further he had to inform the captain Ranatunga and the team management about the injury and the discomfort to further continue bowling.

According to cricket Manager Duleep Mendis, Vaas has been shown to a surgeon here and indications are that he will be operated on very soon.

Mendis indicated that a replacement will be asked for.

The gut feeling is that paceman Mario Villavarayan will be asked for considering the fact the wickets here are pace friendly with a lot of bounce.

Mendis was pleased with the superb bowling form shown by pacies Pramodya Wickremasinghe. 'Wickremesinghe bowled a super line and got his inswinger working. Only now is he bowling to his true potential. He has certainly justified his selection,' said Mendis.
