Chaminda Vaas, Sri Lanka's strike bowler who was expected to carry the fight to the South African batsmen along with offie Muttiah Muralidaran in the tests and as well as the triangular, was declared unfit and will not take any further part on the tour.

Surgeon F. Ferreira who had look at the x'rays advised the management that what has been revealed in the x'rays would not permit Vaas to bowl as he would like.

Incidentally Ferreira is an expert on this kind of diagnosis and according to cricket manager Duleep Mendis, Vaas will undergo surgery within the next few days.

Once operated on Vaas will have his leg in a plaster cast and will have to stay that way for at least three weeks.

Surgeon Ferreira performed similar operations on the ankles of Allan Donald and Shaun Pollock and had them quickly back in action.

Paceman Nuwan Zoysa's arrival has been a blessing to the team.

It was dejected Chaminda Vaas whom I met on the morning of the test.

'I was keen to perform on these fast and bouncy pitches. But I am sad that this had to happen during the First Test. Anyway that is the career of a cricketer goes', said Vaas.
