Joes in 121-run win over St. John's

St. Joseph's entered the pre-quarter finals of the Coca-Cola Cup inter-school limited over tournament when they beat St. John's College, Panadura by 121 runs in their first round match played at Darley Road yesterday.

Taking the first lease of their home wicket St. Joseph's made 218 for 9 in 50 overs with a top score of 71 by Dilan Ramanayake.

But the Josephian bowlers D. Fernando, I. Hettiarachchi, Shenal Warnakula and R. de Silva combined effectively to defend that modest total. St. John's were bowled out for 97 in 31.2 overs.

Chief Scores:

St. Joseph's: 218 for 9 in 50 overs.

St. John's: 97 all out in 31.2 overs.

Thurstan and St. Sebastian's were the other two teams to enter 'pre-quarters. Mahinda were to play Thurstan at Nomads grounds but the latter received a walk over as the Galle school team did not turn up. The Katugastota Antonians too conceded a walk over to St. Sebastian's Moratuwa in the first round.

Defending champions St. Joseph's, along with Thurstan and St. Sebastian's will now advance to the pre-quarters to be played on Sunday.

Meanwhile, 11 more first round matches will be worked off in Colombo, Kandy, Mt. Lavinia, Pannipitiya, Kandana, Kalutara, Moratuwa and Katunayake today.

The most interesting of them all will be the game between Royal and Kingswood at Reid Avenue and the match between Nalanda and Dharmapala at Pannipitiya. Maris Stella, the Group 'B' league champions, will be the guests of Trinity in Kandy.

Easy for Sylvestrians

St. Sylvester's College, Kandy helped by a superb bowling by Chamila Rathnayake (4 for 13) scored an easy eight wicket win over Asoka Vidyalaya. Colombo at Peradeniya to enter the quarter finals of the Schools Coca Cola Cricket Tournament which ended yesterday, Chamila bowling his left arm medium pace delete accurately reduced the visitors to a modest total of 91 all out in 40 overs and the home team knocked off the required runs in 20.5 overs for only two wickets.
