Coca Cola Cup school cricket round up
Daily News - Monday 02, February 1998

Peterites in 93 - run win

by Chris Dhambarage

A solid 210-run second wicket stand between Jeromme Fernando (98) and Angelo Fonseka (95) helped St. Peter's to beat Thurstan by 93 runs to enter the quarter finals of the Coca-Cola Cup schools limited over cricket tournament at Bambalapitiya yesterday.

Taking the first lease of their home wicket, the Peterites lost their first wicket early but, Fernando and Fonseka took up the challenge and hit Thurstan bowlers to all corners of their College ground during their marathon partnership which frustrated the visiting bowlers.

S. Perera, was the most successful Thurstan bowler (2 for 57) as St. Peter's made a healthy 264 for 7 in their 46-overs per-side pre-quarter final game.

In reply, Thurstan were bowled out for 171 runs in the 39th over. They never looked comfortable against Petrite bowlers with Nirmal de Silva doing most of the damage with figures at 4 for 23.

Ananda-Royal clash in crucial match today

Ananda take on Royal in a crucial Coca Cola knock out limited over cricket tournament match at Ananda Mawatha today. This tournament is conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association.

The Anandians who emerged runners up in the League tournament are determined to regain the title and certainly signalled a warning to the rest of their opponents by scoring over 300 runs in their first round match against Sri Jayawardenapura MV. Royal who suffered a six wicket defeat at the hands of S.Thomas' College on Saturday will have a tough task in containing the strong Ananda batting line up.

Meanwhile the defending champions St.Joseph's College too will have a tough match on their hand when they confront the unpredictable Isipatana outfit in another pre quarterfinal encounter at Colts grounds, Havelock Park. Isipatana are capable of causing an upset and are quite confident after having defeated St.Anne's College in a first round tournament fixture.

The giant killers Dharmapala MV will travel to Galle and will take on Richmond College in another pre quarterfinal fixture. The Dharmapalians created the biggest upset by overcoming Nalanda and will be hoping to continue with the good work.

S.Thomas' College should have their own against Lumbini MV at Mount Lavinia while D.S.Senanayake will be up against Kalutara MV at Kalutara. In addition St.Sebastian's College will meet St.Sylvester's at Moratuwa.
