Date-stamped : 24 Oct97 - 14:17 Day 1 report Rennie records best first-class figures John Rennie recorded his best first-class figures for Matabeleland on the first day of their three-day Logan Cup cricket match against Mashonaland A in Bulawayo yesterday. The bespectacled Zimbabwe Test seamer finished with 9-76 off 27.3 overs, including the first eight wickets to fall, as the second-string Mashonaland side were bowled out for 312 in their first innings. At stumps, Matabeleland openers Ross Craig and Dillon Raj cautiously took the score to 12-0 after nine overs. With pace bowler Heath Streak out of the attack, Rennie, successful more in one-day internationals for the senior side than in the Tests, scythed through the batting virtually single handedly. Among his victims were Murray Goodwin and Trevor Penney who hit 78 and 76 respectively. Goodwin recently returned to Zimbabwe after failing to make it in the Australian Test side, while Penney is a Zimbabwean contracted with Warwickshire. Day 2 Report Matabeles post strong reply Half-centuries from captain Heath Streak and Ross Craig enabled Matabeleland to post a challenging reply against the Mashonaland A total on the scond day of the three-day Logan Cup cricket match in Bulawayo yesterday. Zimbabwe strike bowler Streak once again showed his all round ability when he clobbered 81, including 11 fours and a six, while opener Criag hit a patient 76 in more than three hours to help Matabeleland finish on 300-7 declared, just 12 behind the second-string Mashonaland total on the first day. Mashonaland A stretched their lead to 65 when openers Mark Vermeulen and Tim Bartlett took the score to 53-0 at stumps. Resuming from their 12-0 in reply to Mashonaland A's 312 the Matabeleland batsmen took advantage of a flat wicket to score with ease against a non-too-penetrating bowling attack.
