Scotland ring changes

Saturday 26 April 1997

SCOTLAND'S selectors have been forced to make several changes to their team which travels to Leicester on Monday to face the county champions in their Benson and Hedges Cup group match at Grace Road.

Eight of the squad which returned from the ICC Trophy in Malaysia, with places in the Commonwealth Games and World Cup assured, are not available for selection due to work commitments, including captain George Salmond.

Also missing are the trio of bowlers who played such a significant role in their Malaysian triumph, spinners Ian Beven and Keith Sheridan, and seamer Stuart Kennedy.

Opening batsman Bruce Patterson (Ayr) gets a recall together with Stirling County's Graham Hurlbatt, Carlton's Jim Govan and Grange's Peter Steindl.

Iain Philip (Stenhousemuir) leads the team and John Blain has been released by Northamptonshire. The teenage pace bowler has recently signed a two-year contract for the county, who are in the same group as Scotland. The two teams meet on Monday, May 5 at Northampton but Blain will not be released for that game.

Northamptonshire's chief executive, Steve Coverdale, said that the experience of playing for Scotland against first- class opposition could only be of benefit to the youngster but that it would clearly be nonsense for him to play against his own employers.

SCOTLAND: I L Philip (Stenhousemuir, Capt), J A R Blain (Heriot's & Northants), D Cowan (Freuchie), A G Davies (Grange), S Gourlay (Freuchie), J W Govan (Carlton), G P Hurlbatt (Stirling), D R Lockhart (Glasgow Accies), B M W Patterson (Ayr), M J Smith (Aberdeenshire), P D Steindl (Grange), J G Williamson (Clydesdale).

Edinburgh parks team Corstorphine make their debut in the Caley 80/- Scottish National League Second Division at home to Forfarshire today.

The capital side whose home is at Union Park are the only public parks team in the league. They won promotion by winning the East League last season.
