Yorkshire colleagues find mixed fortunes

ENGLAND fast bowler Darren Gough and his White Rose team-mate Gavin Hamilton had contrasting luck as they sought to hone their fitness in Yorkshire's Heavy Woollen Cup, believed to be the game's oldest knockout competition.

Gough turned out for Huddersfield League club Shepley, claiming two for 37 from his 12 overs as Bradford League opponents Brighouse were dismissed for 160. However, in reply, Shepley could muster only 110 with Gough, batting at No 3, dismissed for six.

Hamilton marked his debut for Kirkburton, of the Huddersfield League, with a hard-hitting 114, helping his side to the preliminary round's biggest score of 366 for six, a figure which proved well beyond the reach of Central Yorkshire League foes Gildersome, who were dismissed for 104.

Annfield Plain's defence of their Tyneside Senior League title started badly with a 53-run defeat by Sacriston, for whom Alan Worthy contributed 58 and six for 59.

Jason Dumighan claimed seven for 61 and hit an undefeated 76 as Swalwell beat Seaton Burn by eight wickets while John Handy, chief steward at Durham's Riverside HQ, enjoyed an afternoon away by scoring 82 for Consett against Whickham.

Pakistani all-rounder Asif Mujtaba's arrival at Norden, of the Central Lancashire League, has been delayed, enabling deputy professional Peter Sleep to score the CLL's first century of the season against Radcliffe.

Karl Gorse became the first player to reach three figures in the Bolton Association with 102 for Astley and Tyldesley against Standish, and there were also hundreds for Barnoldswick's Bruce Hara in the Ribblesdale League, Mike Newman, of Irby, in the Merseyside Competition and John Toothill for Manchester Association champions Ashton on Mersey.

David Wonfor, always a heavy scorer in the Leeds League, opened his account with 163 for Kirkstall against Cookridge and in the North Lancashire League game between Barrow and Carnforth. All four openers, Justin Quint, Sean Miller, Tony Barow and Dave Greenwood, topped 50.
