Date-stamped : 25 Jun97 - 06:18 Gough snares hat-trick By Andrew Collomosse at Headingley Yorks (249) bt Ireland (53) by 196 runs DARREN GOUGH produced his best one-day performance to wreck what at one stage seemed realistic hopes of an Irish victory. A de- structive 46 from 47 deliveries, which effectively took the Yorkshire score out of range, turned out to be little more than an appetiser to the best figures by a Yorkshire bowler in the competition. After allowing himself a few minutes to savour his best score, the England fast bowler tore the heart out of the Irish resis- tance with seven wickets for 27 from 9.5 overs, bringing proceed- ings to a conclusion with the first hat-trick by a Yorkshireman in the 34-year history of the 60-over event. Ryan Eagleson, Greg Molins and Paul McCrum were Gough`s final victims as Ireland succumbed to the lowest score recorded against Yorkshire. Any prospect of a Yorkshire visit to headquarters this autumn looked remote as a splendid pre-lunch spell by McCrum reduced York- shire to 55 for six in the 19th over. After a bizarre opening over by Ea- gleson, featuring four wides and the wicket of Anthony McGrath, McCrum settled into a 12-over spell which earned him the wickets of Martyn Moxon, Bradley Parker and Richard Blakey for only 26 runs. The recovery was underpinned by Craig White and Peter Hartley, who added 100 for the seventh wicket before Gough arrived to put on 79 in 12 overs with Hartley and take the game beyond Ireland`s reach.
