Date-stamped : 11 Jul97 - 14:21 Kallis has perfect answer By D J Rutnagur at Uxbridge Middlesex (280-6) bt Gloucs (277-9) by 4 wkts AT 39, Monte Lynch`s eye is no less keen than when Surrey re- cruited him 20 years ago. He scored a rumbustious century off 107 balls yesterday, but in a losing cause. It was cancelled out by a brilliant hundred by Jacques Kallis, whose contribution to Middlesex`s win, achieved in the last over, was enhanced by the capture of four wickets for 47 and rewarded with the man-of-the-match award. An early reverse suffered by Middlesex was made light of by Kallis`s partnership with Mark Ramprakash. This promised to take them a long way but Ramprakash, his head thrown back, drove fa- tally. Mike Gatting did not last long, but then Kallis and Jason Poo- ley, who saw Middlesex to victory with an unbeaten 79, took them to 200 with 13 overs left. Kallis, who included two reverse sweeps for six in his reper- toire, got out edging a back foot force. Two superb catches by Jack Rus- sell and Martin Ball then briefly tipped the scales in Gloucester- shire`s favour, but Pooley calmly got 23 of the last 30 runs required. The look of the pitch, which was used last week for Middle- sex`s championship match against Lancashire, left no doubt that it would be an ally of the spinners and Gloucestershire, who in- cluded two, predictably decided to bat first. However, they had consumed well over half their allotment of overs before they achieved stability and began to gain momen- tum. Apart from a swept six by Mark Alleyene in the last over before lunch, he and Lynch batted sedately until just 15 overs were left.
