Date-stamped : 11 Jun97 - 10:48 Costcutter Cup: Scots no match for Roseberry By Andrew Collomosse at Harrogate Durham (226-2) bt Scotland (222-7) by 8 wkts MIKE ROSEBERRY did not have to be asked twice to seize this gift- wrapped opportunity to regain some semblance of form. Faced by a moderate Scotland total, an easy-paced pitch and a friendly attack, Durham`s erstwhile captain guided his side to victory with five of the 55 overs to spare, easing his way past three fig- ures in the process. His unbeaten 102 off 155 balls included 10 fours and three sixes yet Roseberry will be under no illusions that his recupera- tive in- nings was anything more than useful batting practice for the sterner test that Durham face against Gloucestershire today as they attempt to win the Costcutter Cup for the second year in a row. Scotland, making their first appearance in the Harrogate one- day competition`s 22 years, never threatened to cause an upset. Winning the toss, the 1999 World Cup qualifiers started well, with Bruce Patterson and Iain Philip adding 90 for the second wick- et after the departure of Drew Parsons. The early loss of John Wood, who went to hospital for an X-ray on a badly-bruised hand after bowling only 19 balls, might have sig- nificantly disrupted the Durham attack but for the excel- lence of man-of-the-match James Boiling, who strangled the scoring rate just as Scotland were seeking to press the accelerator. His 11 overs yielded only 18 runs for the wickets of Philip and George Salmond. Patterson eventually fell three short of a well-earned hun- dred, caught at wide long on. From then on it was one-way traffic as Rose- berry and Jon Lewis put on 95 for the first wicket before Lewis was caught and bowled by Ian Beven, allowing the fluent Paul Collingwood to join Roseberry in the match-winning partnership.
