Date-stamped : 26 May97 - 06:15 Brown shatters own record By Geoffrey Dean at Leicester Surrey (238-5) beat Leicestershire (234-7) by five wickets LEST anyone should forget that he made a match-winning hundred against India in the third one-day international exactly a year ago, Alistair Brown gave a reminder of what a powerfully destructive player he still is. Single-handedly yesterday, Brown won this game with the highest score made by a Surrey player in the Sunday League, 157 not out off 117 balls. This broke his own record of 142. On this superlative form, Brown should return to England one-day colours next year. Leicestershire, who did not bowl that badly at him, simply could not contain him as he hit with both control and cleanness. Three times he cleared the ropes, once memorably dumping Alan Mullally into the long-on fence. His driving, straight and through extra, was powerful and immense, and helped bring him 15 fours. After Brown and Mark Butcher had put on 107 in 15 overs, with Butcher contributing just 16, Surrey looked as though they would canter home. But they then lost wickets regularly and at 175 for five in the 28th over, Leicestershire seemed to have a chance if only they could dismiss Brown. The only time they got close, however, was when Parsons could not hold on to a return chance which had been driven back like a rocket. Leicestershire were threatening to make 250-plus until Ian Salisbury, in his first appearance for nearly two weeks after stubbing his spinning finger, took three timely wickets. Jon Dakin belted 19 off his last over, which spoilt decent figures. Source :: The Electronic Telegraph (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/) Contributed by The Management (help@cricinfo.com)
