Date-stamped : 02 Jun97 - 14:17 Hayden lifts Hampshire off bottom By Charles Randall at Southampton Hants (278-4) bt Warwicks (264) by 14 runs HAMPSHIRE lifted themselves off the bottom of the table at Southampton yesterday, their success ending a sequence of 24 games without a win against county opposition. The likelihood of a first Sunday victory at headquarters for a year improved when Matthew Hayden drove his way to 118 off 90 balls, with Giles White and Shaun Udal in lively support. Warwickshire fumbled five routine catches in the gusting breeze. Hayden escaped twice andextracted a price of 13 fours and three sixes, one of which hit a roof tile on the other side of Northlands Road. The Australian had been in the field for the whole of the con- current championship match and might well have added a fourth day if he had not been run out by Udal`s deflected drive. Dominic Ostler`s 70 off 61 balls and Ashley Giles` 57 off 28 kept Warwickshire in contention almost to the end.
