Date-stamped : 09 Jun97 - 06:16 Law finishes off Surrey By Geoffrey Dean at the Oval Essex (184-4) bt Surrey (176) by 6 wkts; target increased ESSEX maintained their excellent Sunday League form this sea- son with a victory that was not as comfortable as six wickets and seven balls to spare would suggest. Danny Law was their match-winner, hitting 55 not out off 41 balls as Essex, needing 14 off the last two overs, got the runs off five balls from Chris Lewis. Law and Ronnie Irani added 88 in just 12 overs after Surrey had clawed their way back thanks to two outstanding catches. Mar- tin Bick- nell`s heroic diving effort on the extra cover boundary to remove Stuart Law was one of the best he will take in his career, and Nadeem Shahid`s sprint to reach a top edge from Paul Grayson was also worthy of high commendation. Surrey had threatened a much bigger total, losing their last eight wickets in as many overs for just 27 runs. Because two in- ter- ruptions for rain in their innings had caused the game to be reduced to a 35-over affair, Essex`s target was revised upwards under the Duckworth-Lewis regulations since Surrey had begun expecting to face a full 40 overs. Jason Ratcliffe, whose 69 took 84 balls, provided early impe- tus and Adam Hollioake some acceleration with 39 off 40 deliv- eries. But the latter`s dismissal attempting a big hit off Peter Such began Surrey`s collapse. Such and Grayson bowled superbly, exerting an all-important stranglehold. Ashley Cowan also came back very well to finish with four wickets. Saqlain Mushtaq marked his Surrey debut with a tidy perfor- mance.
