Date-stamped : 23 Jun97 - 06:17 Nottingham v Yorkshire By Clive Ellis at Trent Bridge Nottinghamshire (169-4) bt Yorkshire (78-5) by 13 runs A COMBINATION of accumulated mathematical stress and funereal light put paid to Yorkshire`s challenge after they had appeared to have the calculations under control. Yorkshire had begun their innings needing 169 off 30 overs, the same total as that scored by Nottinghamshire, but a third rain stoppage of the day halted proceedings, and they resumed with an adjusted requirement of 143 off 23 overs. Craig White was bowled in the fourth over, but Yorkshire cap- tain David Byas and Darren Lehman were uncannily precise in achieving their quota from over to over. However, the loss of Lehman in the 11th over revived Yorkshire anxieties and when Byas was caught behind off New Zealander Nathan Astle in the following over Nottinghamshire suddenly had vic- tory in their sights. Notts had done well to recover from the depth of 30 for three in the 11th over, at which point Chris Silverwood, who finished with three for 12, was bowling with great hostility. Ashley Metcalfe, the former Yorkshire player, made an increas- ingly fluent unbeaten 70 off 60 balls. His partnership of 55 for the fourth wicket with Astle established the platform for a hec- tic last 10 overs in which Metcalfe and Graeme Archer plundered 84 runs.
