Date-stamped : 07 Jul97 - 06:17 AXA Life League: White leads Yorkshire on daring chase By Geoffrey Dean at Leicester Yorkshire (298-9) tied with Leicestershire (298-9) A BRILLIANT innings of 148 from 114 balls by Craig White, the highest individual score by a Yorkshire player in the Sunday League, almost gave his side a remarkable victory in a game of high drama. Yorkshire`s total was also their biggest in 40-over cricket, surpassing their 296 at the Oval three years ago. When White finally holed out to long-off, 41 were still needed off 23 balls. This became 34 from the final three overs, but thanks to some marvellous hitting from Anthony McGrath (33 off 17 balls) only five were wanted off the final over. The final over was bowled by the wiley Gordon Parsons who drew expertly on his experience and savvy. Alex Morris was out to the first ball of it before three singles were scampered off the next three deliveries. With two needed off two, McGrath was run out try- ing to take a bye to the wicketkeeper. Richard Stemp came in for the last ball, drove it to the cover boundary 60 yards away but was run out on the second run by Iain Sutcliffe, a Yorkshireman. White had never before managed a Sunday League hundred. It was an immaculately paced innings, his fifty coming off 40 balls and his century off 84 before he charged past Dick Blakey`s old record of 130. Darren Lehmann played such a secondary role in a second-wicket stand of 135 in 19 overs that he contributed only 48 to it. White`s straight driving, often on the up, was the most im- pressive feature of his batting. He smote five sixes, all but one down the ground. He rarely hit across the line, timing the ball beauti- fully. Leicestershire`s total was their highest on a Sunday against the Tykes. But having plundered 61 between overs 31 and 35, they managed only 25 from the last five. Darren Maddy, devasting through midwicket, took only 45 balls for his 70, and James Whitaker drove majes- tically through extra cover for his 50-ball 66. Jon Dakin`s 27 was bludgeoned off just 11 deliveries. Morris`s four for 49 was a Sunday best, but Peter Hartley`s bowling at the death was more significant. Where Yorkshire erred badly was in giving away 40 extras, including 14 wides, five bowled by Chris Silverwood.
