Date-stamped : 26 Aug97 - 03:08 Ward and Fleming see off threat of Caddick By David Green at Taunton Kent (81-6) bt Somerset (89-7) by 4 wkts KENT maintained their challenge for the Sunday League title with what was finally a comfortable win under Duckworth-Lewis calcula- tions. But they had many anxious moments, not least from Andrew Caddick, one of England`s heroes on Saturday. After Somerset had faltered to 89 for seven in what started, at 4pm, as a 25-over match, and then reduced further, through two showers, to 18 overs, Kent hit real trouble as Caddick took three wickets for eight. Graham Rose had the first victim when Matthew Walker hooked to square leg. Caddick then clipped Alan Wells`s bails, had Graham Cow- drey caught and then yorked Mark Ealham. Shortly afterwards rain intervened again with Kent wobbling at 16 for four. Their target was revised to 78 off 13 overs and with Caddick and Rose unable to bowl again, each having bowled 20 per cent of the total overs, Kent`s task was simplified. Some meaty blows from Trevor Ward and some staunch support from Matthew Fleming saw them home with four balls remaining. Somerset`s innings never got going. Put in, they began quite promisingly with Michael Burns hitting Ben Phillips over long- off into the churchyard, but he holed out a next ball, Wells mak- ing the catch on the cover boundary. Simon Ecclestone, awarded is cap yesterday, was soon caught behind, and Piran Holloway front-edged to mid-on. Mark Lathwell, too, went cheaply, caught at extra cover.
