By David Green Somerset (473-7 dec) bt Oxford Univ (241-8 dec & 186) by an - Oxford morale is dented
OXFORD University, very much the underdogs for Wednesday's University Match, suffered a blow to morale at Taunton as they went down to a heavy defeat at the hands of a Somerset side well below full strength. Oxford looked like saving the match but, with three overs left, Keith Parsons yorked Alex Scrini and next ball had Mark Wagh, bat- ting one-handed to protect split webbing on his left hand, leg be- fore. Somerset, 323 for three overnight, declared at lunch after adding 150 runs. Oxford, 232 runs adrift, lost wickets steadily, however, principally to former Derbyshire slow left-armer Richard Sladdin who took five for 60. Chetan Patel and James Averis played confidently to put on 44 for the sixth wicket but both fell to unworthy heaves. Wagh, Oxford's most successful batsman, expects to be fit to lead the side against Cambridge.
