Canberra v New South Wales
Match report for CricInfo365 by Rick Eyre - 31 October 1998

New South Wales all-rounder Shane Lee became the second player to win the sponsor's jackpot by hitting a six onto the Mercantile Mutual sign in today's one-day game against the Canberra Comets.

Lee won $ 90,000 (approx $ US 56,000) by scoring a direct hit on a large sign situated at long-on just alongside the sightscreen during his innings of 85 this morning. A total of nine signs bearing the Mercantile Mutual logo are strategically placed around the boundary, with a cash prize on offer to the batsman who hits one of the signs on the full. The jackpot increases by $ 10,000 per game, but is re-set at the start of each season if not won. Since the promotion began in the 1993-94 season, the jackpot has gone off only once before - Steve Waugh winning $ 130,000 for hitting a sign at the WACA in a Mercantile Mutual Cup game in the 1995-96 season.

New South Wales, sent into bat by Comets captain Mike Veletta, were 2/10 before Rodney Davison (89) and Lee added 159 for the third wicket. At the end of their fifty overs the Blues were all out for 235. No other batsman passed 16. Left-armer Leigh Hansen, opening with fire for the Comets, took 4/31 from his ten overs. Merv Hughes, looking these days more like the heavy roller in coloured clothing, took 1/44 from his ten.

The Canberra Comets started disastrously as Peter Evans was out first ball of the innings, caught by Shane Lee at second slip from the bowling of Stuart Clark. It was, however, Stuart MacGill who did the damage for the Blues. Two days after flying back to Australia from the Pakistan tour, MacGill took two wickets in his first over and finished with 5/40 from his ten. MacGill has taken 11 wickets at 11.45 in four Mercantile Mutual Cup games and must be a serious candidate for Australia's one-day squad, regardless of Warne's fitness. English import Chris Adams was one of MacGill's victims having scored 22 from 25 balls.

In light rain that threatened to end the match with Canberra well behind on run-rate, Graeme Cunningham, batting at seven, smashed 76 from 65 balls in his MMC debut innings to bring Canberra back from a dismal situation at 138/8, but they were dismissed after 43.2 overs for 205. Shane Lee won the man of the match award, as if his earlier $ 90,000 prize was not enough.
