WILSON TAKES MAIDEN FIVE WICKET HAUL AS SOUTH AUSTRALIA HAVE THE BETTER OF QUEENSLAND AFTER DAY ONE
by Lawrie Colliver - 11-14 March 1999

South Australia (1/19) trail Queensland (239) by 220 after day one at the Adelaide Oval.

Today was a breakthrough in the career of a young fast bowler who has gone without luck this season as South Australia gained the upper hand over Queensland at the Adelaide Oval.

Paul Wilson, who virtually this time twelve months ago was making his test debut in India, today captured his first five wicket haul as South Australia dismissed Shield favourites Queensland for 239 on a typically flat Adelaide pitch.

His figures of 5/68 from 23 overs were a reward for perserverance after entering the game with ten wickets at 55.2 after a clearly unsuccessful Shield season. His opening spell saw him remove Jimmy Maher (edge to first slip), Martin Love (second ball) trapped in front and Stuart Law (caught at second slip) all for ducks in the space of eight deliveries. Then on the brink of lunch he returned to remove Andrew Symonds (38) just as the right hander was starting to look dangerous. Wilson lunched on 4/26 from ten overs as Queensland were 4/107 in a rivetting pre-lunch session.

Wilson's day could have been better as after tea he had Paul Jackson edging between slip and keeper at catchable height when the veteran was 18*. But that has sort of summed up Wilson's season from his point of view.

``It has sort of got the monkey off my back'', Wilson said after a day where South Australia bowled well and held five catches behind the wicket, something that hasn't always happened this season.

Wilson's opening partner Brett Swain, who has made great strides this season, went wicketless prior to lunch before snaring the vital wickets of top scorer Matthew Hayden (77) and Geoff Foley (18) in consecutive overs after lunch. Hayden batted fluently for two and a half hours hitting eleven fours which were mainly sweetly timed drives through the off side.

Queensland fell to 7/151 after Wilson trapped Wade Seccombe (6) in front to get the so far elusive ``five for'' but then the Queensland tail dug in and added 88 for the last three wickets, with Mike Kasprowicz smashing 43 in a stand of 48 for the eighth wicket in an hour with the stubborn Paul Jackson (37 not out) who resisted for over two hours.

Kasprowicz became Brad Young's only victim from 24 overs, as he holed out in the deep to a lofted sweep, just seven shy of a maiden fifty and then Joe Dawes, after lasting nearly an hour in a valuable stand of 35, edged a Ben Johnson slower ball to first slip.

The new ball then accounted for Scott Muller (1) brilliantly caught and bowled by Brett Swain, who finished with 3/51 from 19.2 overs.

South Australia slowly ground its way to the close fearful of losing early wickets and had done well until rookie Shane Deitz (11) fell to the leg side trap that Muller had set for him with just four overs remaining.

Nightwatchman Brad Young and opener David Fitzgerald saw the side through to 1/19 at the close - with the game set up to give Queensland some work to do to ensure it will gain a home Shield final.
