Wellington v Canterbury
Basin Reserve, Wellington
6 February 1999 (50-over match)

Result: Canterbury won by 49 runs

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Welcome to CricInfo's live coverage of the 1998-99 Shell Cup final
between Wellington and Canterbury at the Basin Reserve in
        Wellington
The Cup itself was just flown into the ground by helicopter,
Wellington have won the toss and decided to bowl (Canterbury's
captain Gary Stead said he would've done the same)
Wellington are unchanged from the line up that defeated Northern
Districts in the major semi last weekend, Canterbury have replaced
Stephen Cunis with Shane Bond from the side that defeated ND in
        the elimination semi
pitch is in good condition, but there is a green strip at either
end of the wicket which may cause troubles outside off stump if
the bowler's pitch it right, bit of moisture there
little turn expected, bounce is good, fastish outfield
       perhaps a 230-250 wicket
as for the weather, just high cloud expected, fine and warm, 24
        degrees maximum
fireworks going off in the ground now!
and now a bungy/swing jumper flies off the top off the main stand
        roof
rather unusual opening entertainment for a cricket match, even a
        final, in New Zealand
Steve Dunne and Doug Cowie are today's umpires
both were appointed to the World Cup panel of 12 later this year,
Dunne as NZ's #1, Dunne selected as one of the next best by the
        ICC
Wellington feature 4 current or former internationals, Canterbury a
        healthy 7
2 of them will be opening for the Cantabs today, Llorne Howell and
        Nathan Astle
Astle just coming back from a month's injury to his leading batting
hand, caused at this very venue by Javagal Srinath, so he has some
bad memories to erase - a bit of bad form too, a duck and 13 in
        his last 3 digs
       2 digs, rather
Carl Bulfin to open up from the Vance Stand end
a little delay as something off the field is distracting the field,
a sponsors hoarding in fact, it's duely moved
Wellington have to make hay early on their decision to bowl first,
the last 7 finals have all been won by the team batting first
0.1 Bulfin to Howell, no run, angled to backward point
0.2 Bulfin to Howell, OUT: what a start for Wellington! shorter ball,
he tried to pull it but it got up on him far too quickly, and
merely lobbed it straight up, captain Twose takes a simple catch
        at short midwicket

in many ways a typical Howell dismissal, tends to try and cut ones
either too close to him, or pull those on the wrong length, rash
shot given it was the 2nd ball of the match
Craig McMillan is the new batsman, freshly coming off his 125 off
        103 balls against ND

0.3 Bulfin to McMillan, no run, ouch! short of a length and hops up,
McMillan jumps and fends away with the gloves when he didn't
really want to even play a shot to that, was forced onto it though
already some zing in this wicket
0.4 Bulfin to McMillan, wide: no run, and that causes the first run of
the innings, cut away down leg side, Dunne calls it
0.4 Bulfin to McMillan, one run, streaky, off the shoulder of the bat
in the air, down to third man
considerable bounce, McMillan didn't know much about that one
0.5 Bulfin to Astle, no run, outside off, a late prod from the back
foot, never really committed to it, fair ball nonetheless, a tad
        wide
0.6 Bulfin to Astle, no run, jumping back and fended out to point

Glenn White is the opening bowler from the other end
unusual sign in New Zealand domestic cricket, let alone opening the
bowling, White is a chinaman bowler

1.1 White to McMillan, no run, shortish, no appreciable turn, pushed to
        cover point
1.2 White to McMillan, no run, better ball on off stump, McMillan
quietly leans forward with bat/pad in defence
1.3 White to McMillan, two runs, strays down the leg side and McMillan
laps it fine for a couple
1.4 White to McMillan, FOUR, cracking stuff! charged down the pitch
keen to dominate early despite the early wicket, got inside the
line of that one down the leg side, and driven firmly through
        extra cover
1.5 White to McMillan, two runs, full, deliberated paddle again, well
run as they steal the second, travelled slowly enough to do so as
        long leg fielded
1.6 White to McMillan, wide: no run, down the leg side, tempting yet
another paddle, doesn't catch up with it but it's sufficiently
wide anyway for the free run
1.6 White to McMillan, two runs, well what do you know? full down the
leg side and yet another paddle for two!

2.1 Bulfin to Astle, no run, well forward, jags back in a little, taken
        on the pad, no concern
2.2 Bulfin to Astle, legbye: one run, shorter down the leg side, again
jagging back in appreciably, struck high on the pad and it
balloons away square, enables the single
2.3 Bulfin to McMillan, wide: no run, wide outside off, marginal call
as it moved away a little further late, Dunne reckons it's enough
2.3 Bulfin to McMillan, no run, shoulders arms outside off stump
2.4 Bulfin to McMillan, wide: no run, wide down the leg side this time
unfortunately what's assisting the bowlers is also going to punish
them harshly, if they don't control their movement
2.4 Bulfin to McMillan, no run, beauty! beaten outside off, McMillan
was pretty much caught on the back foot pushing away towards cover
2.5 Bulfin to McMillan, no run, and a near identical repeat, but
disconcertingly it kept low for the first time
2.6 Bulfin to McMillan, one run, quicker ball angling on leg, forced to
fend it down from his ribcage wide of short fine leg

3.1 White to McMillan, one run, lucky on two counts! charged and tried
to loft over the off side, inside edged through midwicket, looked
for the second run but Astle sent him back and he fell over at the
non-striker's end, almost failing to get back altogether as the
        throw was fired
in, managed to stretch out and extend the bat over the line however
3.2 White to Astle, no run, watchfully forward in defence
3.3 White to Astle, no run, on middle and leg, again happy to quietly
drop it down into the pitch
3.4 White to Astle, no run, flighted, driven back to the bowler
3.5 White to Astle, one run, off the mark at long last, taps it down in
        close on the leg side
3.6 White to McMillan, OUT: oh what a vital breakthrough, McMillan
couldn't help himself, swung it away but the trap was set and
Larsen was eagerly sitting out at deep midwicket well inside the
        rope, straight down his throat

McMillan typically shows he can't control his aggression every
delivery and pays the price for an early departure, Canterbury a
        bit shaky
captain Gary Stead promotes himself up the order ahead of Harris
and Cairns, looking to steady the innings

4.1 Bulfin to Astle, three runs, full outside off, smacked to mid off,
partially saved but it was fairly hit, the long retrieve down the
ground provides for a third run
4.2 Bulfin to Stead, one run, full and wide outside off, thickish
outside edge all the way down to third man where Pasupati does the
        fielding
4.3 Bulfin to Astle, one run, quicker ball on middle and leg, tucked
        away cleanly through square leg
4.4 Bulfin to Stead, one run, short ball, on the back foot comfortably
dabs it down into the ground to vacant point
4.5 Bulfin to Astle, no run, leaves outside off, came back late and
wasn't far away from off stump, but he judged that well
4.6 Bulfin to Astle, (noball) two runs, oversteps, pushed away just
backward of point, time for a couple as third man nips around to
        field
replay suggests Steve Dunne was a bit hasty with the call, looked
to be part of his heel behind the line

legs, played straight to wide mid on however
5.3 White to Stead, no run, well flighted dropping it on a good length
outside off, reaches for it driving to short cover
5.4 White to Stead, no run, gives himself a little room on off stump,
tighter ball there, just cut it out to point in time
5.5 White to Stead, no run, leans well forward, turns it from off stump
towards square leg looking for any gaps in the infield
5.6 White to Stead, two runs, a bit of time as it sits up outside off,
back cuts edgily in the air just wide of short third man

6.2 Bulfin to Astle, no run, fuller, this time tries a full blooded
heave through the covers but loses eye contact with it, hence
losing any willow contact, not pretty
6.3 Bulfin to Astle, no run, cracked straight to mid off
6.4 Bulfin to Astle, FOUR, smash! down the pitch and cracked over cover
6.5 Bulfin to Astle, no run, throws in a slower ball, straight and

Canterbury further into the mire on a lively bowling pitch
despite the strong batting lineup, they may have to consider safety
first to be able to post a decent total
Chris Cairns the new batsman, again Harris is left further down the
        order

7.1 White to Stead, no run, oh my gosh! gently tried to tickle that
down the leg side, *just* misses leg stump from a rebound from teh
        back of his back pad
through the keeper's legs, but by the time anyone had realised
where it was, short third man had swooped around in cover
7.2 White to Stead, one run, pushed up to mid on
7.3 White to Cairns, one run, driven down to long on, off the mark
        straight away
7.4 White to Stead, no run, turned squarer direct to wide mid on this
        time
7.5 White to Stead, no run, clipped off the pad to square leg
7.6 White to Stead, two runs, tries his best to keep the Craig McMillan
memory alive, completely pre-meditated paddle shot, more of a
scoop as he reached forward to chip it just wide and over the

Pasupati gets a bit of treatment on his shoulder by the physio on
the boundary rope, probably won't be long until he gets a go at
        the bowling crease either

8.1 Bulfin to Cairns, wide: no run, short and very wide, called so
8.1 Bulfin to Cairns, no run, an absolute beauty! beaten outside off,
caught fending on the creaseline like Astle and McMillan before
him, didn't commit himself forward enough in time
8.2 Bulfin to Cairns, (noball) no run, yikes! very short and straight,
a demon delivery and Cairns takes evasive action swaying away just
in time, Cowie gives Dunne the nod from square leg and a shoulder-
        height no-ball is called
8.2 Bulfin to Cairns, no run, slower ball on middle, defends back to
        the bowler
8.3 Bulfin to Cairns, no run, good straight ball just outside off,
pushed to point, some confusion in calling but panic sees them
both stay at home to their better judgement, sharp fielding
8.4 Bulfin to Cairns, no run, short of a length, back and defends with
        a vertical blade
8.5 Bulfin to Cairns, no run, back and defends on the on side, Stead
eager for the run but Cairns sends him back, Canterbury clearly
nervous after the poor start, Wellington on their toes in the
        field
8.6 Bulfin to Cairns, no run, *ooh* seams back in to him, cut him in

it was the bounce that saved Cairns that time

9.1 White to Stead, no run, pushed to Bell at midwicket
9.2 White to Stead, one run, well flighted and drops nicely late, but
Stead uses the feet to work it up to long on
9.3 White to Cairns, no run, Roger Twose puts himself into silly point
to exert some pressure on Cairns, it has worked before in limited
over matches, this one he defends back to the bowler
9.4 White to Cairns, one run, charges, half-yorks himself but still
forceful enough wide of mid off, good diving save but doesn't
        prevent the single
9.5 White to Stead, no run, advances down the track on leg stump,

defence, edged along the ground to third man
10.4 Bulfin to Stead, one run, my word, how lucky is that, again?!
yorker that swung in a little, just squeezed it out and behind him
wide of leg stump, he had no idea where it went

11.2 White to Cairns, no run, shaped to charge but just tried to trick
White, he didn't fall for it, nice flighted delivery, forced to
        defend on middle
11.3 White to Cairns, one run, on off stump, turned around the corner to
backward square leg, slow out of the gates as Stead calls him
through, but safely home for the single in the end

11.5 White to Stead, no run, tries to lap it from off stump, misses this
time, struck on the front pad kneeling down, appeal isn't given

2 runs this is? yes, the lap, this time he sticks the bat into

12.1 Petrie to Cairns, one run, a more than noticeable difference in

side, calls the quick single, Boyer racing in with the dive throw
at the bowler's end, touch and go had he hit, but looked just safe
16.2 Petrie to Stead, no run, watchful and leans on a shorter one,
        pushed to point
16.3 Petrie to Stead, one run, straighter, squeezed up from bat/pad wide
of the bowler on the off side, nips through for another sharp run

39.1 White to Stead, one run, driven to long off

43.1 Larsen to Priest, no run, pulled back to the bowler, well fielded
Twose's theory must be that the less pace on the ball on this
pitch, the harder it is to score in tyhe final overs
but they're still working the singles easily, Bulfin has the
ability to knock the tail over quickly

green patches at either end are still present which are causing it

44.1 Petrie to Stead, two runs, pushed through midwicket, the sweeper
races in but they go for the second, not really a second run
there, Priest was stranded at the bowler's end but Petrie failed
        to collect cleanly
44.2 Petrie to Stead, no run, straight to Twose at mid off
44.3 Petrie to Stead, two runs, full outside off, cracking cover drive

        couple
44.4 Petrie to Stead, no run, well-disguised slower ball, runs it back
        to the bowler
44.5 Petrie to Stead, three runs, smart shot, lifted it over midwicket,
great run around the boundary to keep it back inside the rope by
Jefferson, can't prevent a comfortable three though

45.2 Larsen to Priest, one run, chipped down to long on on the bounce,

45.3 Larsen to Stead, two runs, turned down to long leg, wonderful
running to the danger end by Stead caught the field napping, a
better through may have still challenged, but it was too high
45.4 Larsen to Stead, one run, similar again but through square leg,
        just the one this time
45.5 Larsen to Priest, one run, tries to pull outside off, doesn't get
around it and it lobs up just short of Bell at deepish mid on, has
to scamper through for the single after being caught on the back
foot, the throw is wide at the bowler's end

Petrie to continue at this end in the meantime however, he has 3
left so will no doubt bowl 2 here

46.1 Petrie to Priest, two runs, slashed through backward point, a bit
of a chase for the man roaming around in the deep gives them an
        easy couple
46.2 Petrie to Priest, one run, chopped to backward point, Stead calls
him through for a near-impossible single, the dive throw comes in
but no direct hit, which would've seen him short by some distance,
        and he makes it

        point
46.4 Petrie to Priest, no run, pulled but direct to a diving Twose at
        shortish midwicket
46.5 Petrie to Priest, one run, cracked straight down to long off,
