Barbados trounce Leewards

Three-time champions Barbados started their hunt for the regional limited-over cricket title with a comprehensive 75-run victory over defending champions the Leeward Islands as action in Zone Two of the Red Stripe Bowl continued at Alpart yesterday.

Paced by a blistering innings of 62 off 57 deliveries by captain Philo Wallace and some tight bowling by left-arm pacer Pedro Collins, medium-pacer Henderson Broomes and left-arm spinners Winston Reid and Ryan Hinds, Barbados, despite losing their last six wickets for 19 runs in 34 deliveries, scored 235, and then knocked away the Leeward Islands for 160 in 46.2 overs.

After losing the toss and being sent in to bat, Barbados, through Wallace and Sherwin Campbell, who scored 31 off 60 deliveries, sprinted to 89 without loss in the 17th over and although they lost some ground against the offspin of Anthony Lake, who took one wicket for 32 runs off 10 consecutive overs and medium-pacer Hamish Anthony, who conceded 41 runs off his 10 overs, were going well on 216 for four in the 45th over before the sudden collapse.

``The pitch was sweet, and I was timing the ball beautifully,'' said Barbados captain Wallace who struck three massive sixes - including two over square-leg off pacer Curtley Ambrose, and seven glorious fours - including a vicious pull to midwicket and a spanking square-cut off pacer Kenneth Benjamin.

The luck, however, favoured Barbados as wicketkeeper Ridley Jacobs missed three catches and one run out after the Leeward Islands had removed Campbell and Roland Holder to make it 143 for three in the 33rd over and appeared to have recovered from the early blast of Wallace.

In a disappointing performance, however, Jacobs dropped the left-handed Adrian Griffith three times.

Blessed with such good fortune, Griffith went on to hit three sixes and three fours while scoring 59 off 66 deliveries before he tapped a return catch to left-arm spinner Keith Arthurton at 182 for four.

The competition continues today at 9:30 with Barbados going for victory number two against the United States.
