August 2nd Sunday Old Sedberghians won the ninth Cricket World Trophy final with two overs to go by two wickets in an absorbing match which built up to a tense finish.
On winning the toss Sedberghians invited Hamptonians to bat and then bowled very fast on a bouncy pitch traditionally renown for being slow and low. One snorter from Duncan Player hit Gary Turnhill on the lower chin who had to retire for treatment at Warwick Hospital but returned later to resume his innings.
After losing early wickets, 44-4, Old Hamptonians fought back with Graham Perkins (72) and Andy Evans (41) before a further flurry of wickets halted their momentum just as a substantial score seemed likely. The tail used up the full 55 overs to reach 181-8. Sedberghians set off confidently and seemed to have the match wrapped only for Burnham (who founded the Barmy Army to take three wickets) and give Hamptonians a hint of victory. However Duncan Player from the Derbyshire County League responded boldly with some huge sixes but when he fell on 47 Hamptonians hit back with two more wickets including a run out. With 8 wickets down and Hamptonians bowlers and fielders maintaining a stranglehold on runs Sedbergh played out a succession of dot balls with overs running out. In the end a four passed a despairing dive from Burnham saw the northern Old Boys home with two overs to spare.
Cricket World Trophy was founded by Dr Ian Thwaites, President of Old Eastbournians Cricket club who won the Trophy last year and is administered by Cricket World Magazine who also sponsor the Final.
The final was played at Warwick School whose Old Boys Association celebrate their centenary this year. The school, of course, is many centuries older. Old Sedberghians also celebrate the AssociationŐs centenary this year.
Cricket World Trophy is played to a 55 limited over format with bowlers restricted to 12 overs maximum. Originally the competition was played to B & H Format but for the last two years it has been a straight Knockout out just like the other two old boys competition. (Brewers Cup and Cricketer Cup).
