RYAN Sidebottom has a proud family tradition to uphold as he embarks on his first-class career. Yet the signs are that the youngster inevitably dubbed 'Son of Arnie' is heading in the right direction.

The 20-year-old left-arm seamer produced a hostile spell of three for 18 from his first four overs to halt Somerset's assault on a reachable target of 186 in its tracks.

Aided by three catches by wicketkeeper Richard Blakey, Sidebottom removed Peter Bowler, Richard Harden and Simon Ecclestone, and with the dangerous Michael Burns comically run out for an aggressive 25, the match swung irretrievably in Yorkshire's favour.

By the time the umpires finally admitted defeat against the constant drizzle, Somerset were 38 runs short of the required target under the Duckworth/Lewis scoring system.

On a pitch offering plenty of movement, Yorkshire's progress was sedate, characterised by an opening partnership of 71 in 19 overs by Michael Vaughan and Craig White.

The first 11 runs came in singles, and it was not until the 13th over that Vaughan stroked the first four of the innings. He hit four more and reached his fifty with a six over point off Marcus Trescothick's first ball before hitting the second straight to substitute Matthew Bulbeck at extra cover.

Graham Rose and Richard Parsons were the pick of a parsimonious attack although Dermot Reeve's Sunday League comeback was brief. Somerset's director of cricket was forced to limp out of the action with a groin strain after bowling 4.4 overs for 12 runs.
