SURREY, who hammered Hampshire in the championship game by an innings and 184 runs, had a rude shock in yesterday's Sunday game, in which, after choosing to field first, they lost at Southampton by 75 runs.
Hampshire owed much to Robin Smith, 62, and Giles White, 58, for their second-wicket stand of 124 off 23 overs. This, with Matthew Keech's 31-ball innings of 42, underpinned Hampshire's very respectable 239 for eight.
Surrey started solidly but struggled after Mark Butcher had holed out at deep cover. Alistair Brown, whose record Sunday innings of 203 was made against Hampshire last year, soon chipped Peter Hartley tamely to extra cover.
Nadeem Shahid made a defiant 48 off 58 balls but Surrey's downfall was completed by Shaun Udal, who took a competition-best five for 43.
