THANKS largely to Tim Hancock's highest score in one-day cricket, 73 off 72 balls, and tight bowling from Courtney Walsh and Jon Lewis, Gloucestershire gained a thrilling victory. At 58 for five in the 19th over, they were in deep trouble. But Hancock, ably supported by Jack Russell, supervised the plunder of 93 from the last 10 overs.
With Notts seemingly on course for victory, requiring 38 from six overs, Walsh came back to break a threatening seventh-wicket stand between Nel Gie and Paul Strang, who was yorked. Gie reached a fine fifty from 55 balls but was unable to get after Walsh in his last three overs, which cost only 17. Eleven were wanted from the final over, bowled by Lewis. Only one came off the first two balls before Gie was run out off the third, attempting a second run.
Kevin Evans drove his first delivery for four before a leg-bye was scrambled, but Paul Franks, needing four off the last ball, managed two before being run out by a 60-metre throw from Hancock.
Greg Macmillan had marked his senior Gloucestershire debut by giving the charge to Franks off the first ball of the innings and hitting him for four.
