Newells confused

Sussex (258-7) bt Worcestershire (155) by 103 runs

SUSSEX are becoming accustomed to the trappings of success. First they went to second place in the championship; now they have won two AXA League games in three days. The stirring from a wooden-spoon double in both competitions last season was accompanied by Chris Adams's elevation to the England squad and, in turn, a new test of their resources in his absence from this match.

Yet the loss of their new captain was overcome with the most comfortable of victories, moulded in 25 overs by the Newell brothers, Keith and Mark, in a second-wicket partnership of 181. The fortune enjoyed by Keith in surviving three chances was later balanced by amendments which deprived him of his first League century.

When he became the first of Graeme Hick's four victims in 14 balls, the scorers' computer credited him with 102. This was first reduced to 100, because of a changed signal from six to four, and then to 97 when three runs were switched to his brother. This disappointment was partly erased when he took five wickets - a personal best in the competition - as Worcestershire were ushered out for 155.
