SURREY were demolished at St Helen's yesterday by pace bowler Darren Thomas who took seven wickets for 16 runs to record the best figures by a Glamorgan bowler in one-day cricket and the third best in the competition.

Only the late Keith Boyce with eight for 26 in 1971 and Richard Hutton, who took seven for 15 in 1969 have returned better figures.

Surrey lost their last seven wickets for only 27 runs in 10.5 overs and have yet to win an AXA League game.

After bowling Ben Hollioake in his second over Thomas took his remaining six wickets for four runs in 21 balls as Surrey were dismissed in only 25.5 overs.

Glamorgan, who opted to bat on a slow pitch were indebted to Adrian Dale who struck 65 from 99 balls and Tony Cottey, who added 76 for the third wicket after two wickets had fallen in the opening five overs.

Michael Powell also made a useful contribution until he was stumped off Saqlain Mushtaq, who opened the bowling. Ian Salisbury, following his seven-wicket haul in the championship game, again performed effectively to take three wickets.

A target of 185 was not an easy one for Surrey on a pitch which became slower as the game progressed and they quickly lost Ian Ward in Owen Parkin's first over.

Parkin bowled an impressive eight-over spell and after Jason Ratcliffe had departed to an inelegant heave, Parkin captured his third wicket when Nadeem Shahid chipped tamely to mid-on. Thomas sent Surrey into disarray as Adam Hollioake holed out at mid-on and Alistair Brown who top-scored with 29 was bowled.

The Llanelli-born seamer then swept aside the lower order and was well supported by Stephen Tomlinson, who was making his Glamorgan debut.

``Owen took three vital early wickets and Watty [Steve Watkin] was his usual economical self so it meant that when I came on to bowl when they were 40 for three they had to go for their shots,'' he said.
