Glamorgan sink Gallian

By Edward Bevan at Trent Bridge

12 July 1998

Glamorgan (177-9) beat Notts (168-8) by 9 runs

JASON Gallian hit 74 from 106 balls as he attempted to win a low-scoring game for Notts, but other batsmen failed to support him as Glamorgan won their third AXA League game of the season by nine runs.

Despite a bad weather forecast, play began on time with Glamorgan captain Matthew Maynard opting to bat on an easy-paced pitch. After Adrian Dale had been dismissed in the second over, Maynard himself top-scored with 55 and Robert Croft made 28 before being bowled by Paul Franks. Notts, needing to score at 4.5 runs an over, soon lost Mathew Dowman to Andrew Davies, who bowled at a brisk medium pace in only his second AXA game.

Gallian and Tim Robinson put on 49 in 12 overs against a steady Glamorgan attack in which Croft and Dean Cosker delivered their 16 overs for only 48 runs.

After Notts quickly lost Robinson and Paul Johnson, Gallian kept them in contention. But Davies conceded only three runs from his last two overs and frustrated batsmen Gallian and Franks were run out.

Paceman Waqar Younis flew home to Pakistan and is unlikely to play for Glamorgan again this season after suffering a degenerative condition in his right elbow. He has made just four County Championship appearances this summer.
